Chapter 1Chapter 1

A new life. A new home. Maybe he wouldn't find me here. In the town Woodchester nothing ever happens. That was until I came along. Innocent people might get hurt because of me. Everywhere I go destruction will always follow ever since I met him.

They already notified the police of my past. Except for my gift no one could find that out. I have the ability to hear people's thoughts. Only my parents and one other man knew. That man's name was Edgar. He is a very dangerous man. My gift could open doors for him. Endless possibilities at the tips of his fingers.

Moving here right after my parent's deaths was my best option. Knowing that Edgar had a hand in their murder. My first stop was the police station for my job when I arrived into town. Officer William was waiting for me by the entrance. He could tell I was nervous. The shaking of my hands was a dead giveaway.

"How are you holding up Grace?"

"I've been better William. Thanks for the job though I really appreciate it. I wouldn't know what to do without you."

"Let me show you where you'll be working." Leading me into a small room he stopped. "This is your room, no one will bother you here." It was a cute small space like I'm used to back at home. Slowly the voices in my head began to create noises while we were in the office.

"Thanks again." I walked out of the office and saw a guy watching me. The voices in my head grew stronger. Shaking them away I accidentally walked into him as I was walking forward. My face heated up as I nearly fell. This isn't the best way to start my first day on the job.

I lost my balance and would've fell if he didn't catch me. When I look at who caught me I was speechless. Not being able to form a single sentence. His sparkling blue eyes hold me in a trance. "Sorry," I whispered. It was the only word my mouth could muster up in the meantime.

"It's okay I'm Scott. I see that you met William." He stated as William reached my side.

"She's the new recruit. Scott meet Grace, she is a 911 operator. That's her office where she will conduct all the calls."

"Nice to meet you." Looking away from Scott's eyes I turn to William. He had this worried look in his gaze. It was like he knew nothing good would come from me knowing Scott. Part of me wonder what that look could possibly mean since I haven't done anything but meet Scott.

"Thanks for the job again. I'll be here tomorrow morning." Hurrying out the door I get in my car. Trying really hard to control my heartbeat. There was something about Scott and I would find out what. Pulling out of the parking lot I go to my new home.

I didn't eat that night. Worrying about where I saw him before. The voices in my head were finally quiet. Tomorrow I will get my answers. Going to sleep I think of Edgar.

The morning sunlight hits my skin as I open my eyes. Rising from the bed I change and get ready for work. The thought that Scott could be related to Edgar frightened me bringing chills down my spine. Who knows what plans they may have for me if I'm ever captured. Ignoring that thought I get in my car and drive to the station where I await my doom.

It took me a while to gather my courage to get out of my car when I arrived at the station. Soon I get out and make my way to the entrance. Seconds go by of me just standing at the front entrance. Taking a deep breath I walk inside. William was the first to greet me. It was nice to be greeted by a familiar face.

"You're here. Let me get you set for the day." nodding in agreement he takes me down the hall where my office is. Going into my office where I would be for eight hours a day. Teaching me how to type the information in the computer while I'm on the phone with the victim. This lesson definitely help me in the future. "Remember this is all you have to do, nothing more."

"I can do that." I said that to him but secretly I was saying it for myself. It's been a while since I've done this job. Once he left I got to work. Not that many called the police station by noon.

When it was time for my break I went to my car so I could be alone. On my way there I see Scott arguing on the phone in his office. Looking more closely I noticed a picture of Edgar on his desk. Edgar was younger in the picture than what he is now. As Scott turned around I began to walk away not wanting him to see me.

His thoughts were about Edgar and me. Does he think I know about him? At least now I know they're twins. When they were younger they were the same height and same hair cut in the photo. Scott's eyes are bright but Edgar's are cold and distant. I have to stay away from Scott. He could be dangerous or even worse be in league with Edgar. If  he works with his brother he could know about my gift.

I stayed in my car for my break. When I walked back inside I could hear voices. Scott was still on the phone when I walked by. Only four more hours until I can leave. Hopefully, he doesn't become suspicious of my actions. As I was starting up again William came in to see how I was doing. Thinking of my answer before I spoke to him. "Nothing much, not many people called."

"That's good. There have been killings happening lately. You don't have to worry about that it will probably go away soon. Edgar won't find you here. Well, I'll see you later."

"Bye." When he left I began to panic. Why would he tell me that on my first day here? It could be Edgar doing the murders. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty if that means he gets what he wants.

The phone rang putting an end to my thoughts. Closing my eyes I answer it. "Hello?" Breathing on the other line was all I heard. I was about to hang up but the person spoke up. When he spoke those words I knew.

"What you don't remember me? I'm hurt you know we had fun together," he snarled.

"How did you find me? The authorities made sure to hide my identity when I moved here."

"Our minds are bound together. Did you forget that you can never escape me? No matter how far you run I'll be right behind you. It's like the game cat and mouse except I'm the cat and your the mouse. Enjoy the freedom it won't last for long."

"Stay away from me," I yelled.

"Not until you join me. See you soon Grace." The phone went dead. Sinking to the floor I cried. Scott ran in and grabbed my arm. Jerking away I ran out of the room and into William's arms.

My tears were starting to slow. I knew my eyes were puffy from the tears I shed. William pushed me behind him and glared at Scott. I flinched away William's anger. Not wanting him to be mad at Scott, it wasn't his fault I ran. Okay maybe a little but still.

"What did you do to her?"

"He didn't do anything. I just have to get out of here." Turning around I run to my car. Even though Scott ran after me, trying to find out why I was upset. He was only going to make matters worse. Being Edgar's brother already puts him on my bad side and him grabbing me today didn't help his case.

When I got home I stayed in my bedroom. Edgar is coming after me and I can't stop it. What if William's gets hurt? He wasn't supposed to find me here, that's why the cops told me to move here. It's a small town that wasn't going to draw attention to myself.

A knock came from my front door. Could it be Edgar coming to take me? Then I realized he wouldn't knock he would just come in. "Coming," I yelled. Going to the door I open it expecting William. Imagine my surprise when I see Scott instead. "What are you doing here?"

"I need to talk to you. Can I come in it will only take a few minutes."

"Since you're already here." Moving aside I let him in. He goes to sit on the couch. Those blue eyes stared into my brown ones. I could get lost in his eyes if I wasn't careful with him. "Who sent you here," I asked tearing my gaze away from him. Making sure it wasn't Edgar that sent him.

"William wanted me to see what's wrong with you. He also believes that I'm the reason you were upset. You looked pretty shaken up when you left the station, Grace."

"Nothing's wrong so you may leave. Tell William I'm sorry for leaving early."

"That's not true Grace. There's a sadness in your gaze." Slowly heading towards me his hand touched my cheek. Catching a falling tear. "Is this about Edgar?" I pulled away as soon as he said Edgar's name.

The shock came across my face. "How do you know him? How do you know that I'm worried about him at all?" I wanted him to tell me the truth. Then maybe just maybe I can figure out what he wants from me. That or I blew his cover and he has to take me to his brother. Well if that's it I'm not going down without a fight.

"He's my friend." Was the only response he gave me. I take this time to go sit on the couch. He followed my lead and sat down as well, but made sure to keep his distance. We didn't speak just sat there staring into each other's eyes. Something was off about him like he was hiding a secret from me.

Scott is the enemy's brother, I need to remember that. But I can't, it's like my heart won't allow it. My mind tells me to ignore the attraction. Just being near him drives me to distraction. What is it about him that pulls me in when I need to stay vigilant?

Scott's hand went around my waist. Pulling me closer to him my chest hit his. He lowers his head and I meet him halfway. It was the best feeling in the world and it felt so right. Putting my arms around his neck I pull him closer. Every worry I had left my body. Soon reality starts to slowly come back.

Jerking back I stand up. I can't believe I kissed the enemy. "This is wrong. I think it would be better if you left."

"You're wrong it was right. You feel the strong attraction pull just as much as I do. We're meant to be together. The sooner you find out the truth the better it will be." For a few seconds he stared at me like he was trying to figure me out. Walking to the front door, he left.

I take a breather before going to make dinner. Scott and his brother said nearly the same statements. Putting my thoughts on the back burner I make something simple and easy for dinner. When I finished dinner I put the dishes in the dishwasher and prepare for bed.

Sleep was hard to find since that kiss kept replaying in my head. Eventually, my exhaustion had won and I went straight to sleep.

The days that followed I tried to ignore Scott. Every chance he gets he tries to talk to me. On the lighter side of things my job is much easier now. I had no more calls from Edgar which made my anxiety calm down. Now only if his brother would stop messing with me.

When my shift was over I said goodbye to William. Hurrying to my car so I wouldn't have to deal with Scott. I didn't expect to see him standing next to my car waiting on me.. He stood stall with a fat grin. Why can't he leave me alone for more than two seconds? Trying to go around, but failed when he grabbed my arm.

"We need to talk but you've been avoiding me. I know showing up at your house was too much. Please give me a chance to discuss the situation with you."

"No, what we need to do is stay away from each other."

"I'll leave you alone after we talk. Though I'm pretty sure after we talk you won't want me to leave you alone. I know you felt something when we kissed. I felt it too. Please, we can work this out."

"We can't do that again it's wrong. I'm sorry but I need to go." Yanking my arm out of his grasp I get in my car. Pulling out of the parking lot driving away blinking back tears. His thoughts were on the kiss and I couldn't stand hearing them. I want more than anything to be able to follow my heart.

When I arrived home, the lights were on. Getting out of my car I realize the front door was slightly open. Walking inside, not seeing anyone inside. I couldn't hear the person's thoughts which means they're blocking them. I reached the kitchen when I heard a noise. Before I knew it I was pinned on the floor. Edgar leaning over me with a deadly grin. Trying to move he slapped me across the face.

"I told you I would find you little Grace. I have to hand it to you though it took a while to get the information I needed from the cops. It took a little persuasion."

"Get away from me you're a monster. You took everything from me, including my parents. Killing those cops will prove to everyone that you're a murderer."

"They were getting in the way. Not letting me see you when I asked. Taking them out of the picture was the only way I could get closer to you. Beside the officers were witnesses and can't leave those alive."

Kneeing him in the gut I got free. I ran to the door, but didn't get very far. He grabbed my hand and stomped on my leg. A sharp pain came to my leg causing me to fall. "Now look what you made me do," he yelled.

"Leave her alone Edgar," said a booming voice. Glancing up I see Scott and boy did he look furious. He stepped away from the door.

"What are you going to do brother, fight me?"

"If that's what it takes, then so be it." Edgar snarled and leaped at Scott only to miss. Scott was already behind him, knocking his body to the floor. He put his foot on Edgar's chest so he couldn't move. I've never seen Scott this angry.

"Edgar leave and don't come back."

"This isn't over yet brother. You know how this will end." Scott let him up and he left quietly.

Once the door closed he turned to face me. He walked towards me but I tried to get away. Realizing I couldn't move my leg I stopped moving. The pain makes me light headed and dizzy. Seeing blood only made the matter worse. Scott gathered me into his arms. With all my strength I tried to push him away. He chuckles and tightens his hold on me and walks to his car.

"Scott," I mumbled.

"I've got you." The darkness took me only to let me hear the engine.

I slowly begin to gain consciousness of my surroundings. The room was plain white and my body was hooked to a machine. I must be in a hospital room. Scott was in a chair right next to my bed. "What am I doing here," I asked.

He opens his eyes stunned to hear my voice. "When Edgar did damage to your leg you started to lose a lot of blood. I got you here just in time for them to stop the bleeding and repair the damage.." Looking down at my leg I see a boot instead of a cast.

"You're Edgar's brother you lied to me this whole time. How did you even know he was at my house? Maybe you're just like him and is only using me for your own personal gain."

"There's a lot of things you don't know about me. The last thing I would ever do is put you in any danger. When the time is right, I'll tell you everything."

"Then tell me I think I have a right to know."

"Let's get you out of here first." Minutes later the paperwork is signed and I'm ready to leave. He helps me into the car since I'm on crutches. The entire way to my house we're silent. Helping me out of the car when we arrived. His hand moved to my back to keep me balanced. Once inside I turned to face him. Scott seemed concerned and scared all at once.

Somehow my heart softened for him. Taking his hand I get Scott to look at me. "Can you please tell me what I need to know? I have to prepare myself for whatever comes next."

His lips tightened. "Sure but let's have you sitting down first." Nodding my head we go toward the couch. After I was seated he turned away from me. Probably not wanting to look me in the eye as he told me the truth. Or maybe he found it easier to confront his circumstances if he didn't have an audience.

"Okay now tell me the truth. The more I know the better I can protect myself."

"He's my twin brother. We were both given gifts the day we were born, but he is different than mine. I can see when someone's in danger or hurt. Edgar's gift can bring pain to others making them suffer how he sees fit. We've been bound to you since birth because we have the same birthday."

What he said brought me back to a dream I had before I came here. "The blue moon," I whispered.

"You know about the blue moon? That shouldn't be possible." That's when he turned around to face me completely shocked. What does he mean I shouldn't be able to know? Was I suppose to find out by one of them?

"I saw it in a dream once. Edgar was there but you weren't."

"Our paths have already been chosen. Listen you have till the blue moon to choose? If you don't your deepest desire will choose for you."

"To choose what? I don't understand if our paths are already chosen for us then why do I choose."

"Sides. I'll explain the rest tomorrow." Before I could say anything he was out the door. Getting up with my crutches I go to my computer needing information on the blue moon.

The moon is very powerful only coming every 200 hundred years. It even states that the powers of others are compelled to show. That's why Scott told me I needed to choose. I can only combine my power with one of them and it will happen on that day. Edgar will never stop until he got what he wanted. In one month I will have to make my decision. Who would I choose Scott or Edgar? Turning off the computer I go to my room and change.

Slowly I make my way to the bed. Sitting my crutches on the side of my bed I get myself comfortable. I kept thinking about who I'm going to choose. Finally, I fell asleep my decision made.

Nicole d'Armand never expected to walk into her apartment and find her fiancé *bleep*-deep in another woman's lady bits. What's a girl to do? Well, after obliterating an 18th-century Meissen vase, delivering a punch that would make a heavyweight boxer proud, and embarking on a night of raucous drinking, Nicole figures she might as well embrace the chaos. But when alcohol and pheromones collide, her wild night spins into something unexpected... Like a ride on the Logan Everett express. Which, naturally, leads to a whirlwind of its own: She's his fated mate. Because of course she is. And he rejects her. Because of course he does. Now embroiled in a mystery bigger than her post-breakup hangover, Nicole finds herself the prime suspect in a murder she didn't commit—no matter how tempting the thought might have been. And the only person who believes her innocence? The same guy who shot down the idea of being her fated mate. Great. Just what she needed: her love life is a crime scene, and the man stupid enough to let her go is holding her freedom in his hands. -- Update schedule: 3-4x a week -- This is a fated/rejected mates urban fantasy romance. Content warning for: Nudity, more nudity, swear words, inappropriate humor, dead people, undead people, incomprehensible amounts of magic, too much supernatural whosits and whatsits, werewolves and all the fetishes that come with them, did I mention the nudity?, and a questionable level of sanity at times.

The Fate Of The World Is In My Hands, But All I Want To Do Is Eat!

'Kill monsters, eat meat' 'I mean, Kill monsters, save lives. Got it.' 'Tut, I could've sworn that the first one sounded better.' She wasn't a girl looking for freedom or self-righteous liberation by a hero, or whatever shit a girl who suffered for almost all her life would crave. -the shit of a life she was living was horrible, but it was bearable, and so she got used to it. Rather, instead of freedom, what this little missy wanted was money. Lots and lots of them so she never has to worry about the next day. Money - bountiful enough that when she has to spend, she doesn't need to look back or calculate her assets to see how much she has left. Money - bountiful enough to get all the fried chicken she could ever dream of. Yeah, you heard it, fried chicken. For those who did not have money to spare leisurely, getting fried chicken was like a pipe dream to them and she had been one of those unfortunate souls. A comfortable roof above her head and no worries as to when she would get ordered around to steal. No worries about when she would get her next meal-- That was her liberation. And she got it. Just that, she got it most absurdly. Awakened! Those were the people ruling the world, alongside beastly and deadly monsters who threatened the safety of average human beings. And those awakened call the shots. Alice never dreamed she would one day be awakened, and compared to others with their game-like system displaying their attributes and strength; she had a full-grown man whom only she could hear, watching her back at every turn and telling her what to do. He was kinda a pain in the ass but she couldn't complain. It was this gift he had bestowed on her that made her the most powerful Awakened there was with stats that even S-class awakeneds couldn't compare to. She was the boss, now. Mwa-hahahahaha. But life didn't go as easy and leisurely as she planned. With great power comes great responsibility, right? Well, in her case with great power comes great hunger. She couldn't go a moment without getting hungry and her stomach had become a bottomless pit. And to get food, she needed money, and to get money, she had to hunt monsters. The monsters plagued humanity, causing catastrophes and taking lives mercilessly. Those monsters, as scary as they may be, were her target and she had to face them head-on. The bigger the monsters the more money she would gain. Yeah, that was the plan, but... This guy acting as her system seemed to have other plans, putting her at the forefront of 'justice' and having her clean the mess he somewhat created. 'Ugh, I can already sense a shadow of foreboding. Someone, please tell me I'm not acting the main character role. I just want to eat, okay?'
