Chaotic System: A Former Assassin in the Game of the Gods

For too long, Riku was content with the simple life of a sushi chef. Having left behind the hectic life of an assassin, his knife now only knows the flesh of fish and food as he hones his craft with both the poor and rich alike. His skills translated well into running his restaurant, his professionalism and dedication to having a perfect record refusing to leave him even in such a low stakes job as running a sushi restaurant.  But then, just as he was cleaning up, he was whisked away to participate in a game that would determine the new god of all existence. While lacking in knowledge about his new surroundings, Riku is still a professional through and through. Offered with the bounty of having his unconditional wishes granted, the Goddess that summoned him wishes for him to win her this game. Well, then he'll just have to make sure that their victory will be as complete as he could possibly make it... Against fantastical beasts and opponent Champions, his skills as an assassin and a combatant will be put to the test. He'll just have to make this Chaotic System actually work to his favor instead of it randomly spitting out nonsensical situational powers that he couldn't use. *** The Deep Blue... The home of the Gods... For eons, the Thirteen Gods have lived together in harmony together with the God Father within the Deep Blue's calm waters. Together, they watched over the universe, content with simply observing as they all worked in tandem with their respective aspects to exact their Father's will. That was, until the God Father died without explanation, and His power locked away until a successor was chosen among His children. Left with an ultimatum, the Thirteen Gods argued on who should inherit their Father's power. Eventually, the arguments became clashes, and the gods eventually realized that them fighting to the death would spell the end of the world. Thus, an agreement was formed. Each of the Thirteen Gods would choose a champion from the sea of souls to fight on their behalf. These champions would brave the Deep Blue's dangers to reach the very bottom of its depths, and whoever gets there first would grant their patron god the right to inherit the God Father's power. Or at least, that was the original agreement. One goddess chose to defy her siblings, deciding to take matters into her own hands by choosing a former assassin-turned-sushi chef as her Champion. Granting him a power well beyond the rules of the game, she is certain that Riku would be the one to end her siblings' endless debates. After all, a goddess of chaos need not to follow the rules...

122 Yggdrasil

Riku gave his goddess a pointed look at what he just heard. Did she seriously think he was the type of person to even bother with that kind of stuff?

"Nyx, we can just move on if you want to."

"But isn't it all beautiful though? Big Brother Ymir did his best to design this place!" Nyx insisted. "Look at how random all the trees and the branches grew! And yet it's all so great to look at!"

The former assassin narrowed his eyes at the obvious bias he was detecting. Somehow, he had a feeling that Nyx had a hand in the design of this place, and it was probably seeping into her own wants in this place.

"Are you sure it's not you that wants to be here?" he scoffed.

"I'm just saying that it looks great, alright?" she insisted. "But if you want, we can go inside Yggdrasil proper. It's just as beautiful as the outside anyway."

The former assassin shrugged as he gestured for Nyx to lead the way, only for the goddess to gesture right back at him with a smug expression.

"I'm not the one leading anymore," she mischievously giggled. "You're on your own for navigation again beyond me just giving you a few warnings."

Riku raised a brow at the obvious teasing, but he shrugged nevertheless before walking right in front of Nyx and entering the cave. Immediately, the sun gave way to the walls of the wooden cave as his surroundings turned from a luscious forest into a dark underground cave illuminated by what little shafts of sunlight was able to penetrate the walls. It was... something he supposed. Nothing like whatever it was that Nyx promised it would be.

"Ohhh.... Look at how all those roots coil into themselves," Nyx gawked in both awe and pride as she pointed out one of the many mundane root systems that littered the wooden walls. "And look at how the grooves on those roots swirled!"

Riku simply rolled his eyes at her antics. He would've pointed out how random and normal the patterns that she was pointing at. They were just that. Roots and wood. Nothing special.

"Wow... I didn't think I- err, plants grew this good, to be honest," Nyx whispered in awe, the small slip of her tongue being all of the confirmation he needed that she had a hand in the creation of this Realm. "Big Brother Ymir really did good here."

Once again, the former assassin remained quiet, simply focusing his attention on navigating the ever winding corridors of the cave that they were currently in. The deeper they went, the more winding the passages became. A few diverting paths also began showing up, forcing him to choose blindly on where to go as his goddess was still too busy admiring her own handiwork.

Seriously, was she this vain before?

"Ah... I remember seeing this before," Nyx absently recounted to herself with a knowing nod. "It was a pain to make all this... Or at least, that's what Big Brother Ymir told me."

Against his own wants, Riku felt his brow twitch at the constant praise Nyx was giving to herself. Even worse, it wasn't even complete praise. She was denying her responsibility with the place, something that she never really did before, and it was annoying him to no end.

"Nyx, you're being too excited about literal roots and earth," he pointed out with a sigh. "Also, if you did all this, then why even bother not just saying it outright?"

"H-Huh? But I wasn't the one that built this Realm," she cluelessly stated. "Big Brother Ymir did."

"Your words and attitude say otherwise," he insisted with a frown.

Nyx was taken aback as she visibly flinched, her frown deepening as she placed a finger on her mouth again. "But it's true though. I only helped a bit with the design of the place. The rest of the Realm was of big brother's own work."

"Then why not just say that?" he scoffed with a shake of his head. "Seriously, you should take credit for work you've done instead of pawning it off to someone else."

It was just dumb and inefficient, not to mention detrimental to one's work to not take credit for something. Especially as a god, it was once again pathetic to see Nyx being this arbitrary again. Then again, this was probably just her nature coming to bite her.

"You know? You're right. I do deserve some credit," Nyx confidently nodded as she straightened her posture. "I do deserve it! I don't- enemy ahead."

Nyx's tone dropped from proud to professional in the span of a single second as Riku drew his knife. Keeping close to the wall, he eventually heard the supposed enemy that his goddess was warning him about. Stumbling wildly into view, the creature almost looked like it came straight out of a fantasy movie with how its entire body was made of wood and leaves. It had no face, but it was clearly partly humanoid with how it stood on two legs and had two arms that it waved around wildly at him. For all intents and purposes, it was some kind of treant or ent... or whatever.

Nevertheless, he quickly he went to work. He'd know if its name soon enough.

*CRACK*

With a swift precious, Riku dashed forward and past the creature, his knife singing in the air as he cut through the thing's wooden legs. Then doubling back, he dashed forward and cut through the thing's arms. The thing died instantly, with wood and shrapnel flying everywhere as he flicked off a few of them that got caught in his clothes.

And finally, after a quick ping from his [Chaotic Tempering] informing him that he had grown stronger again, and he was once more alone with Nyx for company.

"So... What was that?" he asked.

"That was... actually new," Nyx frowned. "They're not the usual scarabs that casually walk around here. In fact, those looked more like Big Sis Solis's work than anything."
