Chapter 34: Alone

Emily never intended for Devon to go with her. And there was only one way to keep him from getting pulled down with her if it all went to hell.

Earlier that night, crouched in the bathroom with a pair of tweezers, pulling free the crusted gravel embedded in her knees, Emily realized she was doing the right thing leaving him out of it. The final piece she pulled out of her raw and bleeding skin was a small, black heart of perfect polished glass.

Sam.

Emily dialed the number on the card. It was easy to find. Right there on the fridge, waiting for her. She listened to the ringing, heard the click as he picked up. His voice. Gerret sounded preoccupied. Until he heard what she had to say.

"Devon knows more than he's telling you." It would be enough for them to question him again, maybe hold him for a while. Long enough for her to get in and out of Brandsom's. Plus it would keep the detective from home, as well. She would only have Todd to deal with.
