What was she thinking? She stumbled again, almost going over this time, only saving herself by grabbing a springy sapling, her toes aching from the impact with the tree root.
"Are you okay?" Devon stopped behind her. She felt like telling him if he'd share the damned flashlight maybe they'd make better time and she wouldn't be bruised from the knees down.
Instead, she said, "Yeah. Let's keep going."
The walk had been silent, punctuated only by her question.
"You're sure you can't see them?" She asked over and over. The girls were so close, she thought he should at least feel them. But his answer was always the same. She was the only freak at the party.
They left the path about where she remembered. Didn't matter much. The girls were there to show her, though they vanished when she and Devon went into the trees. Two steps into the dark and she didn't need them anyway. The pull was unmistakable. And terrifying.
