Avatar The Last Airbender: Cold Paths

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them."—William Shakespeare. This story is about the latter. A man with no recollection of his name, finds himself in the world of Avatar. Forcing to accept the idea that the show he once watched as a kid is not, in fact, fictional has taken a massive toll on him, torn as he is between the awesomeness of his new found powers as well as it's absurdity of how everything came to be, he will do what humans do best, he will overcome and adapt and greatness will follow. to read chapters ahead go to www.patreón.com/cornbringer.

———————————————————————

Finding Ra, was… harder than Vaatu had disclaimed a few days ago, and while I enjoyed going through the Fire Nation, like a tourist, I was growing impatient and all I had to go by was Vaatu's feeling that Ra was in the North somewhere.

—Just keep going north… I will tell you if you need to change directions— Vaatu said in annoyance, but before he went back to sleep, I felt a pull, one that he fell too, —Ra is here… he just moved… he felt us…—

I immediately spun around, looking in every direction, and nothing.

"You sure?" I asked him.

—He is waiting right ahead out of this pitiful town… in the forest…— Vaatu answered, sounding nervous… well, that was new.

Nodding, I walked out of the city on a straight line to the forest wondering what type of animal Ra was going to be… a half birdman like the Egyptians had thought him to be? Or something else.

—A half human chicken… Hahahaha! That is priceless… your world is a chaotic delicacy…— Vaatu laughed getting the mental image of what I had thought of Ra, —Ra is known as the first dragon… he like the others is older than me, older than the ancient lion turtles perhaps…—

A dragon, well that was both cool and intimidating, it also made it easier to look for him. It's not like I can confuse a ten ton big ass lizard with a rock or something.

•Human… And Vaatu, why are you seeking me?• A voice echoed in the forest, seemingly coming from every direction, as I looked around I immediately noticed that somehow the forest had been set on fire without me or Vaatu noticing.

—Ra— Vaatu muttered.

"I wish to learn fire bending from you," I answered in a straightforward way, knowing honesty was the best policy with someone thousands of years older than you.

•Why would I give you a human anything? Your kind destroyed my sons and daughters… for sport…• Ra roared, shaking the earth like an earthquake, even though he was nowhere to be seen.

"I understand your anger… but believe me when I say… I have nothing… not even by correlation to do with what they did to your family…" I really understood his rage, but like I had just said, I had done nothing, nor my blood had anything to do with it. I was from another world before coming here.

•Intriguing… you speak the truth… you were artificially created… I didn't notice because someone fixed you… who fixed your core?• Ra inquired in a more calmed tone.

"The primordial ones," I answered.

•I see… well, in that case… I will train you… I will teach you how to be one with the Fire… how to be a dragon….• Ra said, as everything around me crumbled like an illusion, with the fire around me disappearing into nothingness, showing the healthy forest unburn… and a massive dragon standing in front of me, •I do not care if you use the knowledgeI will give you to destroy humanity, or to save it… •

Well, wasn't that ominous, "Thanks for giving me this opportunity," I sighed.

•La and Tui, gave you a chance, I don't see why not,• Ra stated, as he gestured me to get on his back, •My domain is far away from here… let's go before an idiot tries to claim the banal glory of trying to slay me… without giving a flying fuck about what would happen to the Sun...•

Flying fuck? Hahah, this dragon will become my BFF.

—Good luck with that… Ra while neutral hates everyone— Vaatu stated.

[FIFTEEN DAYS LATER]

When Vaatu said… learn the elements from the sources… aka the spirits that fuel said elements… I thought it would be something like...

Push and Pull… like La and Tui.

Ra was more the kind of teacher to beat me up, over and over and over again, teaching me through pain.

•Fire is both flexible and immobile… you have to be firm but ready to change…• Ra said, once again giving me a tailwhip against the wall of his massively large cave, •Fire fueled with hate and anger is limited… you have to fuel your fire with something that can't be changed…. And until you find that something… you will fail, I will go to sleep… until tomorrow.•

"Did anyone get the number of that bitch…" I said as I walked out of the hole my body had made after the tailwhip, quoting Vegeta.

—I would appreciate it if you didn't enrage him! If you die I die! I don't want to reincarnate…- Vaatu warned with a hiss.

"I know… but still, what does him beating me up everyday has to do with me learning fire bending… I kinda feel he's using me as a human sized punching bag…" I sighed, as I started my before bed/ after dragon daily routine of healing my body with water bending.

—If he wanted to kill us he could do so without much effort… right now we can't face him, so he must be trying to teach you something… something which is also eluding me, rage seems to work just fine… I doubt any human beside you, can produce such power— Vaatu added.

"Maybe Aang…" I chuckled, knowing this would put Vaatu in a mood.

—That little human is nothing compared to us! Unlike Raava I chose the best possible human- Or available to you, but I'll take the compliment I thought as Vaatu continued his monologue —one that already dwarfed her original pick and current incarnation in power!— And there it was his usual response when Raava or Aang were in the conversation topic, it was a real mystery how someone so old was so predictable.

"I know. I'm awesome," I inwardly chuckled as I added, "I will figure it out eventually, for now… let's see how I'm doing with my Blood bending now," I sighed, as I stood up and walked out of Ra's cave with a fully healed body, to start training once again, after all, training was my thing.

When in doubt, train.
