Skagos is a large island is located in the mouth of the Bay of Seals, off the northeastern coast of Westeros. Nearby is the isle Skane and beyond it is the Shivering Sea.
Skagos is mountainous and forbidding with rough and treacherous currents around the isle. The island is has some valleys heated by volcanic activities. The island is also rich in Dragon Glass.
Sailing near Skagos is hazardous, especially during autumn storms when the cold can freeze ropes and sails. The nearby waters have rich fishing grounds.
The island being largely inhabited by a group of people called Skagosi. The Skagosi call themselves the stoneborn, as skagos means "stone" in the Old Tongue.Skagosi are an isolated people descended from the First Men.
Due to the nature of Island and it's history most of the Skagosi tend to inhabit three major locations on the isle.Though there are some who live in caves and mountain fastness scattered across the island.
The Island and it's inhabitants being ruled by Three Noble Houses:The Crowl,The Magnar and The Stane. Each house ruling as Kings of Skagos and at times even High King of Skagos.
Each House tracing their ancestry to the Dawn of Days,to the Three Sons fathered by a Legendary Warlord, Odr, on a Giantess. The Three Houses would at times come together to choose a High King among them.
The Three Great Houses of Skagos lived in relative peace until when Brandon IX Stark, King in the North, broke their power, destroying their ships and forbidding them the sea.Despite being beaten and their power broken the skagosi refused to kneel to the foreign King.
Centuries later the Starks in their desire for total supremacy in the winterlands turned their attention towards the still independent Island of Skagis and its inhabitants. The Skagosi's united behind The High King Ulrik XI Magnar, warred for a century. The skagosi would employ hit-and-run tactics, striking swiftly and then slipping back into the mountains.Several battles would be fought over the century untill The High King Thrrane X Stane knelt to the Starks, the loss being contributed by the overwhelming number of the Stark forces, the lack of resources by that time and The arrival of winter.
Ever since that war people of Skagos grew to despise the Starks and their banner men.The same can be said of people of mainland who have no love for Skagosi.
The discontent between the two groups caused the Skagosi to remain in solitude, some of the outlandish tale of the Skagosi deed made any contact even less likely. Then again the outlandish tale of the Skagosi only came after submitting to the Starks.
The discontent which would lead Skagosi to rebel once more. The rebellion lasted half a decade claiming thousands of lives.A rebellion that also saw the death of The Stark Lord of that time.

"Good then 'oung lord. What about House Stane?"An old man who looked to be in his Sixties asked the young man about Seven-Names-day old.
"House Stane their sigil is a driftwood tree, bare and brown, on green.Their seat of power is Driftwood Hall."
"And 'ords?"
"True to our roots."
The old man leaned back in the chair and asked another question.
"What about House Crowl?"
"House Crowl their sigil is ply flame and black.Their seat of power is Deepdown.Their words are Unshaken."
"And yours?"
"House Magnar our sigil is a green lobster on white, its claws holding a black harpoona. Our seat of power is Kingshouse. Our words are None so Worthy."
The Old man bobbed his head,he had seen the 'oung Magnar grow since he was all but a babe.He knew 'oung Magnar was smarter than any child of his age.
"On the morrow we shall learn about runes."
The Young Magnar or Young Lord nodded his excitedly which drew a chuckle from the old man as he left the room.
Seeing his teacher leave Sigorn Magnar, the heir of House Magnar, headed towards the window in the room, as he opened the window a gust of cold wind hit his face.Looking down he could see some of the household guard tending to the "Unicorn".
No matter how many times he saw the creatures the senses of fascination and wonder didn't disappear.Giant shaggy goat, slightly smaller that most horses, with a single horn that the Skagosi Lord tend to ride upon.
"Close the window else You will catch cold."A voice from behind Sigorn said.
"Mother!"
Sigorn turned around to see his Mother.A tall woman, with dirty blonde hair, with a strong will and equally strong personality, someone who could best most men in arms and combat.
"I assume that old coot has taught you everything."His mother,Arya Magnar nee Stane, came up to him picked him up.Something he didn't resist as he knew the folly of such action.
"He has.All that's left is to learn about runes."Sigorn watched as his mother closed the window. His mother carried him and sat on the chair placing him ontop of her lap.
"Good,As a lord of Skagos it is imperative that you learn about runes and common tongue."Sigorn could see hear the contempt in her voice as she said the last part. The Skagosi as a whole mostly spoke in Old Tongue and are quite stubborn at times about their ways.
"I have instructed Brandon to start your training with weapons."
"Live steel?"Sigorn turned towards his mother raising his brows.
"Of course not."She denied the statement as she ruffled Sigorns hair.Sigorn expected that to a certain extent, his mother was like a mother bear when it came to him and his brother and sisters.

So I believe and see Skagos as more akin to the Thenns, better than wildling with weapons of bronze, obsidian weapons and some level of organisation. But relatively backwater compared to most of Westeros, with still performing sacrifices to weirwood , following old traditions and using bronze weapons.
