Chapter 101: Charge Through
Once preparations were almost complete,
Wu Heng waved his hand, and the vehicles started up, driving directly onto the main road.
As they entered the main highway, the road widened significantly.
Both sides were piled with abandoned vehicles, but they didn't completely block the road.
Wu Heng sat in the passenger seat of the small bus in the middle, with skeletons seated behind him.
The vehicle was being driven by Qiangzi from the auto repair shop.
He hadn't expected to be assigned to drive for this King of Hell, and as he drove, he couldn't stop wiping the sweat from his brow.
The various skeletons in the back were terrifying as hell.
The vehicles lined up, engines roaring.
Soon, zombies began rushing out from both sides, attacking the convoy.
They pounded and clawed at the vehicles, producing slapping sounds and the screech of claws on iron plates.
This was where the importance of the modifications became evident.
The reinforced iron plates and bars significantly reduced the zombies' ability to damage the vehicles.
However, Wu Heng noticed a small detail.
It seemed that zombies killed by the car didn't grant experience points.
Either that, or he wasn't getting experience because he was in the passenger seat.
After driving for some distance,
they were supposed to bypass a side road to avoid the populated residential areas.
But as soon as they entered, the convoy began to slow down.
Zzz~!
The vehicle's radio crackled with static.
Then Li Yanhong's voice came through, "The road ahead is blocked. We need to stop and clear it."
"Convoy, prepare to stop. All humans stay in the vehicles until I give the order," Wu Heng said into the radio, then turned to the 'Big Head Skeleton' behind him, "Have the skeletons disembark and take out the zombies."
Creak~!
The entire convoy gradually came to a stop.
The skeletons inside quickly leaped out of the vehicles.
They began to engage the approaching zombies.
More skeletons quickly formed a spear formation, facing the horde that had been following the convoy.
Thud, thud, thud~!
The dull sounds of impact echoed.
The zombie horde crashed into the skeleton ranks and slammed into the armored vehicles.
A fierce battle broke out, with the sounds of roars, hacking, and the wet thud of meat being cleaved echoing across the battlefield.
The drivers clung to their seats, ducking down and praying that the skeletons wouldn't lose.
"Big Guy, go help them."
The Big Guy stepped off the bus and charged toward the horde.
Like a runaway truck, he plowed into the horde.
A large number of zombies were knocked down or sent flying, while the skeletons' spears advanced, killing the zombies in waves.
Soon, the battle neared its end.
The remaining scattered zombies were cut down by the skeletons.
The stench of corpses filled the air across the battlefield.
"Clear the battlefield, pile the bodies to the side," Wu Heng instructed the Big Head Skeleton.
All the skeletons began to move, carrying the bodies to the sides.
The bodies would be retrieved on the return journey.
So they needed to be placed in a noticeable spot to avoid being forgotten.
Wu Heng then picked up the radio and said, "Li Yanhong, unload the forklift. I'll have the skeletons protect you."
The forklift was unloaded, and Li Yanhong began moving the abandoned vehicles to the side.
Soon, the road was cleared.
All the skeletons reboarded the vehicles, and the convoy continued forward.
...…
Yanghai Hotel.
On the second floor of the hotel, in one of the rooms,
"Brother, you should go on your own. Don't worry about me. If we keep hiding like this, we're both going to die. You should go; I won't blame you for abandoning your teammate."
A young girl in a wheelchair said softly as she turned the wheels.
Not far from the window, a young man stood.
He pulled back the curtain slightly, peeking outside.
Hearing his sister's words, he immediately waved his hand to stop her from continuing, his expression tense. "Shh~! The number of zombies outside is increasing. Keep your voice down, or we're done for."
Hearing that the zombie horde was growing, the girl immediately fell silent, her face growing tense.
The man returned and sat down beside her, speaking softly, "It's okay. If things get really bad, I'll draw the zombies away so you can escape."
Back in middle school, his sister had been in a car accident, leaving her legs paralyzed.
The brother had saved up some money, and they had planned to take a trip this year, but as soon as they arrived, the zombie outbreak occurred, trapping them here for many days.
Luckily, they had been on a trip and had bought a lot of local specialties and various snacks along the way, which, combined with the supplies from the hotel, had sustained them until now.
But continuing to hold out would only delay the inevitable, and the outcome was likely already sealed.
"Brother, are we going to die?" The sister suddenly changed her tone, asking fearfully.
The brother hugged her and gently reassured her, "Don't say such depressing things. Maybe a rescue team will come in a few days and get us out of here."
"Brother, I'm holding you back. If it weren't for me, you'd have gotten out by now," the sister continued.
"Don't talk like that."
"Will a rescue team really come?"
"Maybe."
"Why don't we catch a zombie and bring it in? I read in a novel that if you get bitten by a zombie and don't die, you'll evolve. Maybe my legs will get better, and then we won't have to hide anymore."
"Damn, who wrote that? Which platform? I'm going to report it."
"You never know."
"Those zombies out there were all turned by being bitten or scratched. Have you seen anyone evolve? And you believe novels?"
Roar, roar~!
Suddenly, all the zombies outside the hotel let out a collective roar.
The sound echoed throughout the area.
The siblings' faces changed, both of them shivering in fear.
The sister tilted her head to listen and quickly said, "Brother, the zombies seem to be moving away. The sound is getting farther."
"Shh, don't talk. What if they hear?"
"Really, they're moving away. They seem to be going in another direction. Go see what's happening." The sister urged him.
The brother quickly moved to the window and carefully opened a small gap, peeking outside.
By now, it was almost dusk.
A large horde of zombies was indeed moving in one direction, as if something was drawing them.
Following the direction of the horde,
he saw a military-green convoy speeding down a distant road.
"Sister, sis, it's a rescue team. Damn, there really is a rescue team."
The sister pushed her wheelchair over, propping herself up on the armrests to take a look. She quickly said, "It really is… We're saved! But wait, what if they just drive past and don't stop here?"
That was a real possibility; the vehicles didn't seem to have any intention of stopping.
"Lock the door. I'm going to the roof to get their attention." The brother hurriedly said.
"No, it's too dangerous."
"This is our last chance. If it doesn't work, we'll either starve or get eaten. Trust me, this is our last hope."
The brother ran out of the room, quickly heading upstairs.
...…
Zzz~!
The radio crackled with Li Yanhong's voice, "Zombies are appearing on both sides, quite a few of them—maybe fifty or sixty."
"Is the road clear?"
"The road's fine, we can pass through," Li Yanhong responded.
"Charge through; don't waste time on the road," Wu Heng ordered.
"Got it!"
The convoy accelerated again, violently smashing through the zombies as it sped forward.
Zombies from both sides rushed onto the road in a frenzy.
The vehicles resounded with the sounds of pounding and the jolting bumps of running over bodies.
