Angel Smile

The background is set in a small, quiet town on the outskirts of Seoul. In this town, people were friendly, except for one particular neighbourhood. In this neighbourhood, everybody lived their lives as if treading on eggshells, all because of one particular household: the Lees. People surnamed Lee were a dime a dozen, but these particular set of Lees were unique. Dysfunctional. The family consisted of four people; the father and breadwinner Lee Do Joon, the delinquent son Lee Hyuk, the top student Lee Gun, and the town's most beautiful girl Lee Yeo Ri. Lee Yeo Ri was regarded as a saving grace, but before anybody knew it, the saving grace was slowly disintegrating from within. Hidden underneath her perfect, angelic smile, was a girl who was slowly being crushed and torn apart. This is her story. — TRIGGER WARNING — This story contains depictions of rape, violence, and other traumatic scenes. — Cover art by Ren (Twitter: @ikinashi_ren) — Please consider commenting or reviewing; any and all feedback are appreciated! :D

Suspicions

"Do whatever you want," Yeo Ri replied indifferently. "Is that all you want to talk about?"

"There is one more thing." He paused and took a deep breath before continuing, "Miss, your father is truly, sincerely trying to make it up to you. He has erred in the past, but right now he only has good intentions towards you. Please forgive him."

"What?" Yeo Ri raised her eyebrows incredulously. She hadn't expected the man to bring up this matter again, especially after she had made such a 'passionate' speech about it previously.

He took out a smaller package from his pockets. It was a bankbook and a bank card. "Your father has prepared this for you. He only asks that you do not reject it. For the sake of your safety, he has also prepared an apartment in a secure neighbourhood for you. You can just inform me whenever you want to move in. Please be assured, miss, as this property has been bought in your name."

"..." Hearing his words, Yeo Ri closed her eyes, looking up and inhaling slowly. Putting aside how that man managed to do that without her consent, was her words just background music to these people? How did he even do that, when she was still a minor?

Opening her eyes and exhaling loudly, she stared down at the man with a cold look in her eyes, "...You people, really... well, it was my fault for telling you to do whatever you want in the first place."

Secretary Kwon's terse figure seemed to relax slightly, "Please take it, miss. Even if you don't want to use it, at least keep it for emergencies."

Yeo Ri made no move to take the things. She seemed to be weighting her options in her mind. Once she made her decision, she spoke up, "You keep them for me, then. I'll look for you if I ever need it."

"..." Secretary Kwon nodded. The girl neither accepted nor refused it, which meant that she was beginning to ease her heart. He pocketed the items within his pockets once again, his expression somewhat assured.

"Do you still have any business here? I'll take you home." Secretary Kwon straightened his clothes as he headed for the door.

"...None. Thank you in advance, I suppose." Did she even have a choice? Yeo Ri had a feeling that he was going to stick to her regardless of her opinions. Might as well use him well, she decided. Deep inside, she wondered why he was so obedient to Heo Woo Seung, and why he was so willing to follow her around. It was a mystery she couldn't figure out.

With her assent, Secretary Kwon held the door open for her.

Outside of the meeting room, Gun stood with his arms crossed, his brows furrowing in impatience. As soon as he saw his sister walk out, he immediately pulled her to his side as he sized the other man with a sharp gaze.

Not minding her brother's usual overprotective streak, Yeo Ri turned to Park Soo Yeon who had also been waiting for them outside alongside Gun, "Auntie, since we're done here, I'd like to go home soon."

Park Soo Yeon smiled graciously, "Alright. Would you like a ride, Yeo Ri-ah?"

Yeo Ri shook her head, "It's fine, Auntie. You've already done a lot, and even spared some time for us. Thank you for your hard work."

"It's nothing, Yeo Ri-ah. I'll send a few scripts over to you later and you can see which ones you like. I'll send you your updated schedule later as well, since there's already a few small roles lined up for you."

"Yes, thank you, Auntie. We'll be going now."

"Alright, take care."

After parting ways with Park Soo Yeon, Yeo Ri headed straight for the exit, trailed by Gun who kept holding onto her hand tightly and Kwon Tae Yang who silently followed behind them.

As soon as the three got out of the elevator and reached the exit, Kwon Tae Yang overtook the Lee siblings and held up the door open for them while saying, "Miss, please wait for a moment; I will bring the car over to the entrance immediately."

He gestured towards the parking lot, pointing towards his parked car.

Yeo Ri sent a flitting glance over to the parking area, nodding as soon as she spotted the familiar black car.

The older man quickly made his way to the car. While Gun eyed the man warily, Yeo Ri merely stood nonchalantly, her thumb constantly tapping away at her phone as she replied to several texts.

Several moments later, the car pulled up in front of the entrance. Kwon Tae Yang exited his seat and went around to open the car door for his passengers. Yeo Ri didn't spare another thought before walking towards the car, acting as if it was natural for this new Manager Kwon to pick her up and open the door for her to enter.

Gun felt that something was amiss with this interaction. Furrowing his brows, he couldn't help but stare deeply at his sister as his thoughts ran wild.

Yeo Ri, who was holding his hand, immediately noticed that he was lost in thought. Seeing that he wasn't moving, Yeo Ri tugged his hand softly, her head tilted in puzzlement. "Oppa?"

"Let's go, Oppa," she tugged his hand once again, reminding him with that same, unchanging, constant smile on her face.

Gun looked at her pretty little face for a moment before slowly nodding with a stiff smile. Whatever questions he had for her should be asked later.
