His expression made me chuckle. I questioned myself on who really meant to be looking like that, him or I? My reaction upset him.
Ignoring his glower, I said, "Here to kill me." It was not a question, I felt more like I was confirming the inevitable.
"I wish I could, but I need answers." He retorted in an angry tone.
I laughed to myself again. Because I knew, and so did he, that I didn't have the answers he wanted.
"Ask away." I said sarcastically.
But I knew, even if I did have those answers, I would not give them to him. He didn't deserve that much from me. Not after what he had done. Killing me too was a more satisfying option. I did not have much to live for.
"Will you explain what just happened back there?" He shouted, despite the fact that we were both in a very small room and I could hear him even if he whispered.
"How the hell would I know. If you wanted answers so badly, you should have held off killing my parents. Didn't that at least occur to you?" I shouted back at him with tears falling down my eyes to my cheeks despite the protest inside of me to keep them from falling.
He killed the most important people to me and felt nothing. I felt pity for myself. I felt ashamed of myself. The anger I felt towards Roman wasn't close to the anguish in my heart.
The look in his eyes told me he realised that I was not lying. I really had no idea what happened back, and right in this moment, arguing with my parents killer didn't matter. Finding out why what happened back there did, was my goal.
"My father's men, are they still alive?" I asked quietly but firm enough for him to hear.
"Your father didn't have 'men', he had rogues. And you will not know about them because it doesn't concern you." He said, leaving me no room to find some answers.
I was frustrated. He was frustrating me. "Will you then get out of here!I don't need to see your face any longer than I have. So, just go and don't come back. Or better yet, kill me already." I was almost shouting.
At this point, I didn't even understand where I got the energy from to vent at him, because I was weak and defeated.
He however, just turned and left the little cell.
A day later, Lenny paid me a visit.
"I am really sorry about your parents." She offered with a sympathetic smile.
Her smile so warm and friendly that I forgot she was sleeping with the enemy, my enemy.
I just stared at her.
And I think she understood my reaction because she then chose to sit there with me in silence.
Weeks and weeks paased by and I began to get accustomed to this little room. Much as I hated it,much as I missed home and my comfort zone. I needed my freedom.
I was going to be an alpha soon. My pack needed me.
It made me wonder more, if they were preparing to get their alpha back, when I would be a certified alpha anyway. I had so much time and so much to think about while stuck here.
Nevertheless, Lenny did not stop her visits. She came every two days and that warmed me up to her. We spoke a lot about each other and by now, I knew everything about her -well, almost everything-. Like, she was actually twenty years of age and how she had ran away from home with her mate, who was in some trouble with their pack. While on the run, he was killed and she of course was spared of her life. What brought her here , she still did not really understand but she still did not regret it. Because in this pack she found a home and a man by her side.
"I am going out with Roman tonight." she stated looking worried. I wondered whether she was worried that hearing his name would have me make an expression that showed her clearly how much it stung to talk or think about him or if she had her own reason to be worried.
But I asked anyway, "Why do you look so worried then?"
"Last night, I kept thinking about how he might find his mate soon and obviously leave me for her. I am so worried about how that will make me feel." She responded looking down in an attempt to hide her sad looking face.
From what she has explained to me, the mate bond was very strong.
I didn't respond to her, I just shrugged.
"It's your birthday tomorrow right?" she asked, smiling at her own words.
I had forgotten.
Lenny had been so nice to give me the dates and help me while I was stuck here. She had even helped me with my daily routine and made a way to fit into it.
I had showered in the prison showers once a day. And had two meals for each day. So everytime Lenny came, she came with my second meal. A very nice gesture.
Sometimes, it felt like the food tasted better because she brought it. It was a good way to get it all down my throat.
"I totally forgot about that." I responded frowning, feeling shy.
She laughed.
When I woke up, I felt no different than any other day. I was still a prisoner here. My parents were still gone and I still had nothing to live for.
Lenny's visit is what I knew would get me by this day.
And when she came by, I felt all better.
"Happy birthday!" Lenny exclaimed as she walked into the little room.
I gulped at my empty mouth. All I cared about was the food and the nice cake she had brought.
I started eating immediately. She laughed.
She made my birthday special. She explained to me in detail how it felt to find my mate. And that was apparently the best part.
Nevertheless, we talked and we laughed and I was glad to have shared my day with her. I knew especially today, that she was my friend.
Two days later, I was lying on the little bed when the door opened. Odd, I was not expecting Lenny today.
"Lenny, did they let you in again..." the words trailed off seeing that it was not her. It was actually Roman and that was not the reason why I had lost my words.
Something happened, like the walls around me had shifted but still leaving just me and him in a large room. A room where nothing else mattered, but us. I was in a total state of ecstasy. A euphoria.
He was a new person to me. In that moment, he became a part of me and I didn't understand why.
His eyes stayed glued on me. He did not move one step. It was like, he felt the exact same way I was feeling.
"Mate." he whispered loud enough for me to hear.
