----------------------------------------------------------------
Hell's Kitchen, a notorious area in the bustling Twist City, is synonymous with messiness, backward living conditions, ethnic conflicts, and high crime rates.
According to incomplete statistics, there are no less than three gangsters on each street here. The crime rate is alarmingly high, and the residents of the 20-odd nearby blocks are seemingly trapped, living like rats in a sewer, devoid of hope.
However, light persists amidst the darkness—an eternal truth.
Daredevil, Matt Murdock, represents that light in Hell's Kitchen.
By day, he's a blind man running a struggling law firm to make ends meet. By night, he dons a hood, venturing out to combat crime. He matches wits and courage with vicious gangsters. The effort required is beyond imagination, and the bruises he accumulates are an everyday occurrence.
Facing danger has become routine.
It's undeniable that running a justice-oriented law firm in such a location doesn't exactly bring in a fortune. In fact, the law firm has been edge of bankruptcy numerous times.
However, today seems different—a potential savior has arrived.
"A warm welcome, Mr. Lynn!"
Seated in a slightly disheveled office, Matt Murdock wearimg his signature sunglasses as he addressed the visitor, a young man. "I'm curious if you have any business to entrust to our law firm?"
He maintened a friendly demeanor. This income would enable the law firm to sustain itself for some time.
"I'm not here to file a lawsuit."
Lynn got straight to the point: "Mr. Murdock, I'm aware that you're Daredevil. Since losing your sight, you've gained extraordinary senses of touch, hearing, smell, and taste, as well as exceptional combat skills. So, I'd like to offer you a job."
Daredevil's expression changes slightly. His immediate reaction was tightening his grip on the guide stick in his hand, his whole body tensing in response.
But his enhanced senses indicated that Lynn isn't hostile. Daredevil relaxes slightly, though he furrowed his brow and responds, "A job? I already have one, sir."
"Indeed!"
Lynn not surprised by his wariness says"It's precisely because you're an exceptional lawyer that I'm offering you this position. You could view it as a part-time role."
"Part-time?"
Daredevil was a little surprised.
"Correct—a part-time role with a handsome salary. It would not only stabilize your law firm but also enhance your standing."
Lynn glanced around the cramped office. "Perhaps you and your partner could relocate to a more spacious office rather than being crammed in here."
Seeing Daredevil's furrow deepen, he smiles again and adds, "Of course, this part-time position doesn't involve anything bad. It simply requires you to teach a few classes at a school."
"School? Teaching?"
Daredevil was more perplexed. "What kind of school would need a blind man as a teacher?"
"A school that gathers numerous students who possess powers like yours."
As soon as he speaks, Daredevil pieces it together.
"X Academy?!"
The news of the New X Academy's enrollment drive has been making waves lately. Even though he may not pay attention, he's learned about it from his partner, Foggy Nelson, and his assistant, Karen Page.
But he never imagined this matter would have anything to do with him.
"Are you a mutant?"
Perhaps due to their shared superpowers, even though he isn't a mutant himself, he's quite sympathetic to them.
As he speaks, his expression gradually relaxes. "The students at Xavier's Academy are mutants. Wouldn't their instructors be among the best among mutants? Why are they looking to me?"
"That's all in the past. The current Xavier's Academy requires individuals capable of teaching various subjects."
Lynn explains, "You've probably heard that Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters is admitting students. After their studies, these students will naturally reintegrate into regular society. And as we all know... in this country, the law is a game played by the wealthy. Therefore, in order to secure a footing, proficiency in law is essential."
That's the reason he's approached Daredevil. Among the future graduates of Xavier's Academy, there should be a group of skilled lawyers.
"You're quite straightforward... Mr. Lynn."
Daredevil felt a bit uneasy hearing this as a lawyer.
However, he adjusted quickly, shaking his head and politely declining, "While I don't have any aversion to mutants, teaching isn't my strong suit. Plus, I'm already busy with my current work. I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to manage a part-time job..."
Before he finishes, Lynn interrupts him.
"Why not take a look at the compensation first?"
Lynn snaps his fingers, and a check materializes out of thin air, landing on Daredevil's desk. "This is your weekly salary. The class load won't be excessive, so it won't demand too much of your time."
It's a regular check, not designed for a blind person.
Yet Daredevil's heightened sense of touch kicks in. As his fingers brush against it, his heart skips a beat.
"Mr. Lynn is incredibly generous..."
It's unbelievable to him—this is just a part-time gig, yet the pay is higher than that of some of the world's top university professors...
Clearly, the Academy is demonstrating genuine sincerity in recruiting its professors.
From this perspective, if the course load isn't heavy, taking on this part-time job doesn't seem so unreasonable.
Not only would it significantly ease the law firm's financial burden, but he'd also become colleagues with the X-Men, who've recently been in the spotlight.
In case of unexpected events in the future... Wouldn't he be able to call on the X-Men for assistance?
"Mr. Lynn, I think I can—"
Daredevil contemplates accepting the offer, but before he finishes speaking, his brow furrows once again. "Mr. Lynn?"
There's no response in the office.
And, according to his radar-like senses, the young man who'd been sitting across from him... has vanished.
"When did he..."
Daredevil was taken aback when Karen Page, the front desk assistant, walks in. "Matt, who were you just talking to?"
"Huh?"
Daredevil is startled. "Mr. Lynn was just in here. You didn't hear us conversing?"
"Are you kidding? When did I see a client?"
Karen Page looked perplexed. "And you've been alone in the office the whole time. Are you sure you're not daydreaming?"
"Just me?"
Daredevil remains silent for a while, letting out a soft sigh after some time. "Mutants' abilities... truly are extraordinary!"
Karen Page is puzzled.
Daredevil didn't elaborate, merely handing her the check and saying, "I've received a pretty decent weekly salary. I guess I won't owe you any wages anymore."
Karen looks at the check with wide eyes. "Damn! Is this really a weekly salary?!"
"Yes!"
Daredevil felt the assistant's delight and can't help but share in it.
Soon after, using his extraordinary sense of touch, he detects an unexpected presence in his pocket.
He reached inside. Lynn's voice sounds quietly in his mind.
"This is the key to the academy. Hold onto the key for over three seconds and silently say 'Harry Potter' to display your class schedule; silently say 'Dumbledore' to teleport to the academy location."
"Of course, to ensure the personal safety of the college's instructors, if you find yourself in danger, please shout 'Grindelwald'"
In an instant, Daredevil becamr astonished, though simultaneously, he's somewhat perplexed.
Harry Potter...
Dumbledore...
Grindelwald...
Aren't those just names?
Could they be the names of some powerful mutants?
