We talked for a little while longer, and I shared with him my interest in flowers and of the many times I spent tending to the garden. Yes - they are pretty to look at, but it was more than that and to just plant flowers for the sake of planting flowers. The flowers provide pollen which helps the bees to survive, and without bees we wouldn't be able to grow crops. The bees help the flowers too by disseminating and fertilizing seeds. The plants take in carbon dioxide through their stomata and produce oxygen, which help keep the air cleaner and us, healthier. Not to mention the larger role they play in providing energy and habitat to the surrounding ecosystem.
There is a much bigger picture that isn't often seen, and I spend time sharing some of this with him while he genuinely seems interested.
