A Walk Among Stars

Would you give your sight... the very essence of that sense of yours...? So that never again would you be able to see again. For the simple ability to heal. Take upon the injuries of those you care for. As with a single touch. They shall be healed. Whether it be a broken limb... a bruise... or even a whole arm... nothing, not a single thing within your grasp will ever be broken. Yet when I opened my eyes... it was not the kaleidoscope of colors I knew the world as... nor the exuberant face of my sister. No, it was to this empty void. Filled only by my sense of touch. "Of course" There was no other answer that would satisfy my will. For this was my choice... and my choice alone. ... When the world was created... populated by species upon species of beings. Yet a drop here... a star that may have yet to burst. A small flap of some God's coat. For the world was given life. Life greater than others. For they could use magic. An ability so wondrous that many nations had been created and felled in the harrowed halls of libraries. Yet this ability was not equal, and neither was the strength of will. For it appeared within women, every man that was born... for every one of them, there was an equal thousand women. As for magic. A rare occurrence already, made even more rare by the gap. A change in dynamic. For there was not some great king... there was not one holy emperor. Or even a god. There was a queen... a holy empress.... a Goddess. For man's place was not on the battlefield but upon the soft ballrooms, kitchens laden with instruments of creation rather than destruction. Married into well families that cared for them like precious possessions.

Blessed Teaching - 3

When I woke… it was not to the pleasant warmth, given to me by the opulent covers, nor was it to the overbearing, almost tyrannical, souls watching the world through eyes of distaste and distrust.

No… I woke to the feel of burning heat, a rampage within my body that not even my own healing could protect me from. My breath ragged as I tried and tried again to stand on my own two feet.

Yet as my feet landed on the ground, bereft of those strangling covers. I fell to the floor in a heap of limbs. My body refusing to even answer my own call.

Noise that drew another from her slumber, my face turning - no matter how painful - to observe the soul that came running. A hand placed over my forehead, a mutter to herself as she kneeled next to me.

She wavered for a moment before ultimately picking me up by both my back and legs, placing me back within that heat trap. Covered by those same covers.

Then Lyra went to leave. Only I stopped her, carefully tugging around that soul of hers, trying… oh so trying to keep her near me.

"Please…" I begged, my own voice nearly delusional from the searing pain. I… I had felt similar pain before. But this was more than just an echo of that pain. One that went to the wind in mere moments.

This wracked my body with true pain, taking my limbs and folding them over themselves. Taking pleasure in disabling every part of my body.

"I'll be back… I just need to grab someone really quick… just rest." I could practically hear the nervous smile within her voice as she hurried past my grip and to wherever she needed to go.

I placed my hand over my chest, feeling the erratic heartbeat of mine. Trying to calm it with a simple breathing exercise.

In… out… in… out… each of them a rhythmic cycle that followed the next. And when the pain subsided enough for me to think things through.

I found myself truly thinking of why this had occurred. I could think of nothing - truly nothing - that would cause such a condition.

Not within the past day, nor within the week before.

There was nothing within my memory… no matter how hard I wracked it, that stood out to me

[Lyra pov]

I found myself hurrying through building and street alike, searching for that classroom that I knew stood near to where I found myself.

My hand hesitated, but only for a moment. For the heat within struck me with a sense of turmoil, but not enough to truly discourage me from this course of action.

I knocked.

The sound echoing out for a few moments later. Reverberating through the classroom. And when the door opened it was to that golden haired woman. Abigail. Her eyes set to a fierce glare.

Her own students that were so fervently answering questions and asking their own glaring at me with their own hatred.

I even knew some of them, as comrades and enemies. But right now I needed her more than they needed Abigail.

And for that I planted a seed subtly, a plant so ordinary and only changed by my intense desire.

It grew, veiling us in an area where sound would be absorbed within their vines, just as they would absorb the light from that star above us.

"Lyra" She spoke, her voice set into a hasty tone. Almost as if she could sense the turmoil within my soul.

"It's about Gabriel, he collapsed with an intense fever, as his wife I saw it prudent to inform you of this and any action you wish to take."

My tone was just that. Professional. Taking no shit from that intimidating professor. No matter how she may respond. It concerned Gabriel, and he had grown upon me. So if his wife would not care for him, even after knowing of such extenuating circumstances.

Then it would fall to me, the only other in possession of such knowledge, to care and make sure that he made a speedy recovery.

"I see"

She waved her hand and the newly seeded plant burned into a pile of ash, my gaze focused solely on that dead soul of theirs. Only to find a yell pierce through my ears.

Sending those within flying from their seats, papers scattering about. Each judged and personalized for her students.

And without further adieu we left. Abigail following close behind me. No matter how veiled she was from the world.

Of course that was only to those that weren't professors. I knew that she was Abigail, but the students we passed only saw her as another student. As either a friend of mine, or as another random person.

And the reason I found that only other professors would recognize her, well that was because of the friendly wave this other woman gave her. A glint in her eyes as she walked off. Promising mischief.

But soon after we made it back to my room. Opening the door with due haste and finding that his condition had worsened. No longer were the sheets covering him and no longer did he hold a shirt over his body.

I tried to cover my eyes to preserve his dignity and I was left to do that as Abigail approached, a frown on her face as she reached a hand over Gabriel.

And with the absence of anything to do, I merely grabbed a towel, dousing it with cold water.

Further grabbing a bowl of that same cold water.

Then with that in hand I approached, no longer was I able to veil my eyes from that indecent body of his. So cute…

I shook my head… those thoughts belonged nowhere within my mind. For there was more important things to do.

Taking the damp towel from the bowl of cold water I placed it over his forehead, making sure that there wasn't much water to drip anywhere.

It seemed to help. And that was all that mattered to me.
