'Asami, you can do this. You promised him you'll come.'
I sighed as I looked at myself wearing my new uniform. I admit I was afraid that I wouldn't be accepted by my new classmates. What if I'm bullied? After all, it's a small town they probably know about my messed up life.
"Asami hurry up you're going to be late."
"Coming grandma!"
I grabbed my bag and ran downstairs, hugging my grandparents' goodbye. I walked down the road with the country scenery listening to the cicadas as the summer breeze swept past me. It was about to be fall soon as the breeze felt a little cold. I smiled as the country atmosphere calmed me more than the Tokyo city crowd that I grew up in. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad here after all. Even if mom isn't here with me I will be strong.
-time skip-
I waited outside the boisterous class waiting for the teacher to call me in. I felt nervous, I mean who doesn't feel nervous in a new school but in a small town where everyone knows everyone, it's even worse.
"Okay everyone, we have a new transfer student from Tokyo today, be nice to her okay!"
So on cue, I walked in through the door and into the center of the classroom. I felt everyone's eyes watch my every move as they looked me over.
"Hello, I'm Yukino Asami, please take care of me."
As I said that I was met with silence and then all to suddenly I heard a clapping sound. I turned to face the sound and it was Fuji-kun, sitting by the back window seat smiling at me. I smiled back and waved at him thankful that he got me out if that awkward silence.
"Eh Yukino-san and Fuji, you two know each other?"
"Yep, our mothers were friends so we met a few times already since she moved."
"Wow, lucky she is already close with Fuji-kun!"
"Fuji is the lucky one, look at how cute she is!"
"Hey, guys stop talking like we aren't here would you."
"O-okay class settle down..."
"Hey! You guys are seriously discussing this type of topic in the middle of class!"
"It's a serious topic Fuji-kun!"
"Yeah Fuji, you stay out of this."
"What!"
I slowly grinned and then burst into full out laughter at the ridiculousness of the situation. As I continued laughing soon the entire class joined me. I felt relieved to be in this class, they all seemed like nice people. Thankfully Fuji was here too otherwise I would have trouble breaking the ice.
"Yukino you can go sit next to Kitamura since you know him."
"Okay."
As the teacher finally started his lesson I went to the back and sat down next to Fuji-kun. We smiled at each other as I started focusing on what the teacher was saying. I kept losing focus however with him sitting right next to me. My heart for some reason was beating so fast I was afraid he would hear it. His scent felt like a drug to me, my cheeks heating up just by seeing his lazing figure in my peripheral vision.
Perhaps I couldn't deny it any longer, maybe I didn't have any reason to either. That day in August in the middle of math class, I realized my feelings for that annoyingly friendly chestnut-haired boy.
