Genjutsu is all about manipulating someone's chakra and since our mc has less experience in chakra control than Itachi who is a genius in regards to a lot of things, most prominently his genjutsu, it will be hard to break free from his control.

I won't be going to ham on cultivation techniques. He won't be meditating to increase his chakra storage or comprehending the dao. I will just translate some techniques into jutsu's like movement techniques. You can think of qinggong as Tsunade's chakra enhanced strength but applied to the legs.
