They couldn't take a step without alerting the damned bat, hence there was no way of escape. They couldn't wait it out either because surely it would heal from its wounds and eventually find them out.
So their best bet was killing it before it killed them. Easier said than done.

Not only were they haggard and short of breath, but the small cuts that covered the bat's body and the black blood that stained theirs suggested some sort of confrontation had occurred.
He didn't know where and when but based on what he was seeing that was the only reasonable conclusion.
Of course, he could have been wrong, but it was still safe to conclude.
Besides Casa doubted anyone would want to kill such a thing if they didn't know enough about it.
