Striking a Nerve

Alicia gazed at the text on her phone screen, the words she wanted to say stuck in her throat. It felt like she had bitten into a spoiled tomato, an uneasy sensation squirming slowly in her belly.

Throughout the two years Louis had been unable to walk, Henry's behavior towards her wasn't especially warm, but it was respectful. But the moment Louis got back on his feet, Henry's attitude changed in subtle ways. It was as if he thought she was no longer good enough for Louis, tossing her aside like an old tool. 

What a cold-hearted opportunist, Alicia thought and sneered.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated. It was Henry. Alicia braced herself and answered the call.

"Did you read my text?" Henry's voice was frosty.

Alicia hummed in confirmation. "Now that you've taken the money, do what you're told and stay away from Louis. One hundred million isn't a small amount—it can decide someone's life or death."
