When I arrived at work the next day, I walked in and was stunned to find security guards outside the building and inside. I noticed a larger swarm of people with cameras outside too, being kept to the side by security. The security officers asked me to verify my identity and then ushered me upstairs, straight to Mr. Eric Dornell's office.
"Mr. Dornell? What is going on right now?" I ask after the security guards let me into his office.
"My apologies Ms. Xenos. We've had an interesting last few days to say the least." Eric motions for me to sit.
"Well, I believe I can mirror the statement but why was I escorted here by security?" I ask, confused. My mind goes to Sybil pulling something dirty but Eric sighs heavily.
"You haven't been hounded by the press yet?" His question has me knowing now what this is all about.
"No, I haven't. Is this in regards to the situation regarding Morgan Corporation?" I cross my legs, keeping my hands folded in my lap.
"It does. We've had reporters and all kinds of people asking us questions since last week. I was informed Friday after you left, that was partially why I called you. I know you and him are friends..."
"Yes sir. Have you heard that he's been cleared of all charges?"
He holds a hand up and nods, "I have. That doesn't stop the vultures from the press trying to get all the information they can from anyone they can. Apparently HR has been having a lot of issues with them calling, sometimes pretending to be associates and what not to try and get interviews. It's been a pain for their department, but they're doing the best they can at the moment. Do you know if anyone knows the two of you are friends? We've had quite a few calls requesting to speak to you. I was informed that they said they were family members of yours to Mr. Morgan's attorney's associates. HR gave them your email address and that was it, stating you would get in touch with them."
I nod, taking in the information he just shared, "Well, that was ridiculous of them. You know I don't have any family. So I was escorted to make sure I wasn't accosted by the press?"
Eric makes a tight face and draws out his response, "Well... Not only that... You see.."
Suddenly, there is a loud commotion out in the hall with people yelling. A security guard comes into the office his eyes finding mine and Erics.
"Ms. Xenos, Ma'am, please join Mr. Dornell behind the desk. We have a small situation that has just arrived."
With those words, I am confused but stand and move around to the other side of the desk as instructed, Eric standing defensively in front of me.
"What the hell is going on?" I ask confused.
BANG!
Eric's office doors swing open startling me. In walks Sybil, accompanied by a two of her team known as being part of 'Grey's girls' who smile at the security guards.
Really? All this over Sybil? They've got to be kidding me. I roll my eyes and step out from behind Eric.
"All this over her?" I question Eric under my breath with a shrug.
Eric leans against his desk, "Ms. Grey what is the meaning of this?!"
By the sound of Eric's voice, Sybil isn't why the security guards are here.
Sybil places a hand on her hip and gives me a venomous glare, "I came to drop off these files you asked for Mr. Dornell. No one meant to open your doors in that manner. By the way, that crazy person that's been in the building was just tackled and they have someone on their way to take her to where ever."
Suddenly the security guard turns and informs us, "The person is being escorted out of the building, Mr. Dornell."
Eric nods and takes the files from Sybil, "Next time knock, Ms. Grey. Now, is there anything else?" He gives her a reproachful glare as she shakes her head.
"No sir." She turns on her heel and exits the office, her two floozies following close behind.
The security guard closes the door for us and I cross my arms as Eric takes his seat again.
"Mr. Dornell, Eric? What the heck is going on?" I stand there next to his desk, refusing to sit before I get some kind of answer.
Eric sighs, "I told you someone has been claiming to be a family member of yours and won't stop pestering us. Security has been dealing with this person since the building opened at six this morning. They somehow got past security and were spotted going around each floor. Security was sent to remove them but they disappeared and have been looking for them for the past thirty minutes. We were not sure where they were and if they intended to harm you. We were trying to keep you safe, Ms. Xenos."
I shocked and slightly appalled. "What?! Thank you Mr. Dornell. I appreciate the company stepping up to make sure everyone and myself are safe. I don't understand why someone would go to such an extreme to get an interview with me. Because as far as I am aware, no one knows other than the company that Mr. Morgan and I know each other outside of a business setting."
Eric gives me a hard look, his lips pursing and relaxing as his thoughts change and he comes to a conclusion in his mind. "Very well. You'll have the two security guards outside on your floor with you. At least until we know the person is no longer a threat. You may go and start your workday."
Eric dismisses me and I'm still reeling from the fact that someone was causing enough trouble that required extra security for me. As I stepped out the door, the security team followed me to my floor and stayed right outside my office. From the looks I was receiving from the people that were already there, I knew I'd need to address it once everyone else had arrived.
I sat down and sent a message to everyone in my department of the need for security personal due to unwanted visitors in the building and to leave them be and let them do their jobs while they do theirs. I started pulling up my schedule for the day when my secretary came into my office.
"Morning, Melita. I've sent you the files that you need to finish checking today. Also we have four final contract revisions that need your approval before being submitted to the clients. We need those done first. I would avoid your email inbox until IT contacts us too. Apparently, your inbox was flooded with emails from the press, some with attachments too, so they want to make sure there is no malware or viruses that could harm the network. You have a meeting at one with ..."
My secretary informs me of everything and I thank her before opening the files for the final contract revisions she spoke about. I was busy and had very limited time to finish the contracts but thankfully, nothing was amiss and I was able to sign off on them without any issues. I was making my way through the other files that I needed to finish checking, noticing that my email inbox kept flashing with new mail every few minutes. It was starting to drive me a little crazy.
I had to move an open folder to cover it so I wouldn't be tempted to open it. I was focused on my computer taking care of my job when my secretary knocked on the door.
"Ms. Xenos, you have a visitor. They've brought you lunch."
I glance up and nod, not processing what she said other than my name and lunch and went back to the file I was working on. I jumped when a takeout bag was placed on my desk and turned my face up to see Jackson, looking a little disgruntled.
"Jackson! This was unexpected." I rise to close my blinds from all the eyes casting curious glances into my office.
"I sent you an email like you've asked me to when you're working. Have you been that busy?" He asks, pulling me to him and giving me a quick kiss that makes me blush.
"I have been. Today has been crazy actually. I'm surprised that yours is not as well." I take a seat and open the bag he brought me. "Mmm.. Sushi. Thank you."
"Mine has been, just I'm able to tell everyone else to handle it at this point. After what I had to deal with last week, I told everyone I am taking more time for myself. If I pay these people so well and they can't handle delegating things that they do all the time, why should I continue to pay them?" He relaxes into the chair a bit more and sighs, "Plus, I was too ... upset earlier to stay at the office. The person responsible for offering employment to a certain person was found and I had to walk away before I blew a gasket. I will tell you about that once you're off work though."
He forces a smile and stands up, "I just wanted an excuse to get out of the office though. I do need to get back beautiful. Please don't work too hard."
He walks around my desk and bends over to leave a soft kiss on my forehead. "I'll pick you up once you're off. My lawyer will be giving an official statement about that time so the press should be busy with that."
I stand up and wrap my arms around him, "Thank you for thinking about me when you have a lot on your plate too." I stand on my toes and place a quick peck on his lips, "I appreciate you more than you know." I add as our foreheads meet to rest against one another. Our eyes connect with so much warmth flowing between them, that we soon start reflecting each others smile that spreads across our faces.
Jackson pulls me in for a soft and delicate kiss that steals my breath away.
