Chapter 7 Cain

I jumped up as someone yelled my name. Then I realized it was the phoenix that I had been sleeping next to on the floor of the room. I didn't know his name. And I don't remember giving him mine. But it was certainly my name that he had just yelled as he woke up from what had seemed like a nightmare. He was sweating and he looked around the room like a panicked deer that knew it was cornered. The phoenix girl who had supposedly been expecting me jumped from the bed to sit next to him. She calmed him and held his hand. The dragon just sat and watched, a muscle working in his jaw. Before we had gone to sleep he had explained their situation and why I should listen to what the two phoenix said.

They were seers, prophets. They knew what would, or rather should, happen next. They dreamt it. And only with the important prophecies did they see during waking hours. They were important and the dragon needed to keep them safe. He would at all costs since he had been trusted with their safety and he had a debt to pay back whether they knew it or not.

Now it seemed as if they were simply scared children afraid of their own power. The boy was panicked looking around the room until his eyes met mine. Only then did he relax slightly. But now he looked troubled. The longer he looked at me the more the sadness started to show in his eyes but I stayed still and waited for him to speak again. And when he did I never thought I'd hear these words, let alone be scared of the truth i felt in them.

"You saved me. But it didn't help. Because I watched you die Cain." his words sounded like a sob. Barely holding back tears. I never thought that someone who didn't know me would mourn me. Or mourn me even before I died. And I never thought that the simple words " I watched you die." would resonate with enough truth that he couldn't help but be horrified.
