Assignment One Part Eleven

Dax wished to test his new blade's cutting edge and struck a nearby tree. The blade slid through the trunk of the tree as a hot knife through butter. The tree fell with a loud crash, causing birds in the nearby area to fly away cawing in fear.

"That's sharp!" Dax said in excitement.

"I told you it cuts at a molecular level!" Fey said. "Try to be more careful with it. The blade was made for monster slaying, not gardening."

"Sorry." Dax said. "I just wanted to make sure it could cut."

"No, you wanted to play with it." Fey said. "Which I don't blame you. I did the same thing the first time I used one. Well after that I killed the monster with one."

"Well with this blade all my worries are gone." Dax said. "No way a slime can withstand this."

They walked deeper into the forest, searching for their prey. Fey was surprised by the lack of monsters, normally this time of year the forest would be flooded with slimes, as it was their mating season.

After ten minutes of searching, Dax stopped. "Are you sure there are slimes here?" He asked.

"There should be." Fey said. She looked around and saw a cave. "Maybe we should check over there. Something might be above ground, scaring them."

"Or something could be in the deep dark cave scaring them." Dax replied. "After yesterday's incident with the shadow lord thing, I don't know if it is wise to go into a cave."

"That cave was in the city; this cave is outside of the city." Fey explained. "Totally different caves." She pulled out a large flashlight from the backpack she had on. "And behold the brightest handheld flashlight money can buy. There will be no darkness in that cave with this baby." She walked over to the entrance and turned the flashlight on.

The light bounced around and filled every nook and cranny of the cave. "See, not a bit of darkness." She looked around. "Oh, and a slime!"

Dax walked over and looked down into the cave. "Are slimes supposed to look like that?" He asked.

This slime looked like a moving metal blob slowly inching across the cave floor.

"I thought they were blue and translucent." Dax said. "Not gray and solid."

"How should I know?" Fey said. "Do I look like a slime expert to you?"

"Well, you sounded like one earlier." Dax replied.

"That was just common monster knowledge Daxy." Fey said. "I don't know everything about every type of monster, otherwise why would I go to the academy?"

"For the chili?" Dax joked.

"It is good Chili." Fey laughed back. "I don't see anything else in the cave, why don't you go down there and slay the monster. I will stay up here and keep guard. Just yell like a little girl and run away if it gets the better of you."

"I can handle this!" Dax said. He then walked into the cave and made his way to the bottom. It was a narrow passage and he had to be extremely careful not to fall. When he reached the bottom he saw the slime, it was slowly moving and completely oblivious to him. He decided the best way to fight it would be a surprise attack. He lifted his sword and slashed down on the slime with all his might.

The loud sound of metal snapping filled the cave as Dax's sword broke itself on the body of the slime.

"Fey!" Dax yelled. "The sword broke!"

"How?!" Fey yelled back. "That sword should have easily given you the win!"

"Well, it didn't!" What do I do now?!" Dax asked, frantically.

The slime started to bubble and form large spikes upon its body.

"Fey, I think I made it mad!" Dax yelled.

"I see that!" Fey said. "Hold on, I am coming!"

"RAWRRR!!!" A loud noise filled the air outside of the cave.

Fey turned to look. "Shit!" She yelled. "Dax! I am going to try and lure this thing away! I will meet you back at the car! Get to the car!" She ran off, and the sounds of heavy footsteps followed her.

"What thing?!" Dax asked. "Fey?!"

Dax was now in a state of panic. He had a spiked slime inching closer to him and someone large and terrible outside the cave chasing Fey. He had no choice, he had to run for it. He quickly made his way to the narrow passage of the cave. However, in his uncareful haste he stepped too heavily, and the passage collapsed under his feet. He fell ten feet onto the cave floor and was rendered unconscious.

The spiky slime turned and started making its way to his unconscious body. Outside Fey was doing her best to avoid the attacks from the colossal monster that was chasing her. It had a large body and a bull's head.

"Damn it!" Fey said as she ran, barely keeping ahead of the beast chasing her. "I hope Dax gets to the car!"

The beast was carrying a large, spiked mace and would swing it whenever it got close to Fey. She was barely able to dodge it. In a last-ditch effort, she quickly changed direction, facing the beast. She pulled out her daggers and slid between the beast's legs. She slashed at his ankles and feet as she passed.

Her gambit was a success, the beast fell down and roared in pain. She didn't waste any time and ran back to the car as fast as her legs would take her. "Dax!" She yelled as she exited the forest.

To her surprise Dax was nowhere to be found. "Shit!" She said. "Why didn't he go to the car!" She yelled in frustration and ran back to the cave. The cries of the beast she injured still echoed through the air.
