Web of Shadows: Spider-Gwen Against the Nightling

Somewhere in a universe that's a gazillion miles away, Spider-Gwen and this shady character, Nightling, have been playing their own version of cops and robbers. She slings webs and he... talks to squirrels, I guess? Joke, he controls shadows. Anyway, they've got this whole hero-villain dynamic going on. Could be epic, but then, wham! Feelings happened. Yeah, you read that right. I'm just as surprised as you are(not really I wrote it). Why am I even rewriting this? Oh, right. SnowApathie was like "Oh no, not a ChatGPT summary!" Why do books need summaries anyway? Isn't the mystery part of the fun? Its like someone telling you the end of a movie before you even went to watch it. I hate writing these so much, how does one even write one without spoiling parts of the book? Why are you still even reading this? Shoo, go read the chapters. So, long story short - it's a tale of two super-beings, some feelings, and a whole lot of ridiculousness. Might be worth a read, or not. Up to you! Disclaimer: This is fanfiction. Gwen Stacy and Spider-Woman belong to Marvel Comics. Nightling is an original creation. This work is not affiliated with or endorsed by Marvel Comics. A Dance in the Shadows

Under the obsidian shroud of a New York City night, Luke Frenth, the enigmatic Nightling, used his powers to navigate the labyrinthine cityscape. His destination: the imposing Wilson Fisk Enterprises building, a beacon of glass and steel in the city's skyline. Like a phantom dancing with the darkness, Luke moved fluidly, his presence veiled by the whispering breeze.

Meanwhile, perched on a graffiti-clad rooftop, Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Woman, scanned the cityscape with vigilant eyes. The city's rhythm was off tonight, and the undercurrent of tension pulsing through its veins triggered her spider-sense, hinting at an impending disruption to the city's fragile peace.

As her spider-sense intensified, she leaped into action, swinging from the city's skyscrapers towards the towering silhouette of Wilson Fisk Enterprises. She suspected Nightling was back at his games again, and Gwen was determined to protect her city, to hinder Nightling's reign of shadowy chaos.

Arriving at the office tower, Gwen paused on the sidewalk. Despite the darkness, the building seemed eerily vacant. She was well aware of Nightling's elusive nature, his knack for choosing the most unlikely places to strike. But tonight, something felt different. A deserted police car stationed at the end of the block added to her suspicions. She focused on the towering structure before her. She had to catch Nightling. With one last glance around, she pushed open the building's entrance.

Inside the sterile-smelling lobby, Gwen was greeted by an unsettling silence. She made her way down a corridor until she arrived at a private stairwell. As she peered in, she saw two silhouettes outlined by the faint glow from the level above.

One was unmistakably Nightling, adorned in his signature villainous garb, and the other, a frightened civilian, presumably taken hostage. Gwen, wearing her Spider-Woman outfit, steeled herself to intervene. But before she could, Nightling's voice echoed through the stairwell.

"Always just a little late, aren't you, Spider-Woman? Or do you just enjoy the thrill of the chase?"Matching his taunt with a defiant smirk, Gwen retorted, "Just trying to give your shadows a fair fight, Nightling."

Without another word, Nightling, along with the hostage, vanished into the shadows. Left alone in the stairwell, Gwen scanned her surroundings urgently, attempting to piece together the puzzling situation. Nightling was undeniably powerful, but even his shadow manipulation had its limitations. She was certain he was still within the confines of the building, likely lurking in obscurity, biding his time.

"Hiding in your shadows again, Nightling?" Gwen called out, her voice echoing through the empty stairwell. She punctuated her statement with a sardonic laugh, "Oh well, can't expect much from a villain with an over-inflated ego!"

The stairwell fell back into silence, Nightling's response conspicuously absent. This was a departure from the typical villains she had dealt with; Nightling exercised his intellect as much as his powers, proving to be a worthy adversary. Gwen wished, for once, that he was as predictable as the rest of them.

Taking a deep breath, she continued to ascend the stairwell, her senses heightened. Each echo seemed to reverberate with potential danger; each shadow could be a lurking menace. Gwen knew better than to underestimate Nightling - he was cunning and full of surprises.

Just as Gwen neared the summit of the stairs, her senses picked up on a faint, desperate sound - the muffled sobbing of a frightened individual. Her heart hammered in her chest as she followed the noise, her acute spider-sense guiding her through the dimly lit stairwell. When she finally found the source of the distress, her eyes widened in shock. The hostage, a young girl, sat huddled in a darkened corner, her body shaking like a leaf in the wind. To Gwen's surprise, Nightling was absent from the scene.

With a rush of adrenaline, Gwen hurried over to the terrified girl, her instincts as a protector kicking in. She dropped to a crouch, trying her best to offer comfort amidst the crisis. "Hey, it's okay," she reassured, attempting to meet the girl's terror-stricken gaze, "I'm here to help."The girl looked up at Gwen, her eyes reflecting fear and confusion. She struggled to voice a warning, her words barely above a whisper yet eerily clear in the silence. "B-behind you..."

Gwen felt a chill run down her spine as the girl's warning sunk in. Her spider-sense screamed danger, and before she could fully process the words, she instinctively twirled around.

The moment seemed to slow as Gwen turned, her senses on high alert. Emerging from the shadows like a wraith, Nightling towered over her. His eyes gleamed ominously from under his dark hood, his powers of shadow manipulation on full display as the darkness around him churned and writhed. He moved with a predatory grace that was utterly chilling, lunging towards Gwen with a swift, shadowy strike.

Defying gravity, Gwen spun away from Nightling's ambush, launching a web that anchored her to the stairwell's ceiling. As she swung back toward her shadowy adversary, her heart pounded with adrenaline and unyielding resolve. The young girl's safety was at stake and Nightling, with his reign of terror, needed to be stopped. A fierce showdown was unfolding, but Gwen was ready. Retreat was not an option.

"Always attacking from behind, Nightling?" Gwen taunted, her words echoing in the enclosed stairwell. Her smirk was barely visible under her mask, but the amusement in her voice was palpable. "I'm starting to think you're too afraid to look me in the eyes!"

A brief silence ensued, only broken by Nightling's chilling reply. The shadows around him danced and twirled as he spoke, his voice as cold as the abyss he commanded. "Fear, Spider-Woman, is a luxury I cannot afford. Can you claim the same?"

His words hung in the air like an icy breath, causing Gwen's pulse to quicken. Nevertheless, she shoved her unease aside, her fingers tightening around the silk of her webbing. "I think you'll find, Nightling," she retorted, her voice steady as a rock, "I can keep this up all night."

Nightling's response was a low, menacing laugh that echoed throughout the stairwell. "Can you, now?" he sneered, stepping out of the shadows. His hands glowed with an eerie darkness, shadows from the surrounding environment being absorbed into his very form.

"Try me," Gwen shot back, launching herself towards Nightling. Their dance had begun, their movements a ballet of shadows and webs, echoing off the walls of the enclosed stairwell.Nightling met Gwen's attacks with deft counters, using his shadow manipulation to dodge and weave with an uncanny fluidity. Their exchange was a blend of agility and brute force, a back-and-forth tussle that left the air charged with tension.

Throughout the duel, their banter continued, each jab thrown with the intention to distract and unnerve. Would it be enough to tip the scales in either of their favors? Only time would tell. With each passing second, the stakes escalated, their deadly dance growing more intense.

As the battle escalated, Gwen's focus remained unwavering. She needed to protect the hostage and bring Nightling to justice. Nightling, however, was unyielding, his control over shadows making him a formidable adversary. Gwen acknowledged that this was no typical skirmish—it was a test of their wills, a duel of resolve, played out amidst the echoing footfalls and the eerie whistling of the wind through the stairwell. Gwen knew this fight was far from over, but she was prepared to see it through. She wasn't going to back down. Tonight, New York's silent ballet of shadows and web-slinging would reach its climax.

Hey everyone! Hope you enjoyed the 1st chapter, next one will be out tomorrow. Just wanted to take the time to say that whilst I have done research, my knowledge regarding Gwen, and her Earth are not exactly perfect so mistakes will be present!

If you happen to find any errors within the writing please let me know, also let me know if you have come up with a better chapter title as well, I am bad at those!

This is a side-project I am doing whilst writing actual novels so I cannot guarantee the upload schedule, I will try my best though!
