"We've been walking for eleven billion hours," Piper complained. Her steps were getting progressively slower and heavier.
"When did you become such a drama queen?" I asked, tossing her a teasing grin.
Instead of laughing or smiling like I'd hoped she would, she scowled at me, her brows furrowing with annoyance. While we hadn't been walking for eleven billion hours, we had been walking for quite a long time.
We'd woken just as the sun rose, wiped any traces of our stay from the sleazy motel, and then crossed over the Ohio border and into Michigan. Now, the sun was high in the sky, its rays blinding despite the threat of a snowstorm last night. Then again, that was Michigan weather - the beauty of all four seasons crammed into a single day.
"We're not too far from Ann Arbor. It's a large enough city that we can move about mostly unnoticed." I reached for Piper's hand. "We can stop to rest and to get some food."
