Preface

The hooded figure cackled maliciously. It moved its hand towards the rusted knob of the old warehouse and swiftly, nimbly locked it. It looked at the marvellous treasure resting between its hands. With a satisfied smile, it slid its loot into its pocket, and threw the golden key towards the smaller hooded figure standing nervously in front.

"Go. You know what to do with this."

The smaller figure didn't move.

"Look, I told you- I keep the loot, you get money. But first finish the job."

The smaller figure shook its head.

The larger figure eyerolled. It shoved the smaller figure roughly through the dark alley with old cardboard boxes and carts spilt over. Not one streetlamp lit the way as they made their way through the night. No one lights the way for thieves.

They reached a river. Even it didn't sparkle for them. The devils were at play now.

"Go," the larger figure urged.

The smaller figure cracked the key and threw it into the lake. All the evidence of their crime was washed away with it into the river. By the time they would open the warehouse, it would be too late.

The larger figure grinned. In the dark, his teeth lit up the sky with the satisfaction of a job well done. He pushed a few battered notes into the smaller figure's hands. And now everyone was happy. What was wrong with stealing then?

The larger figure pushed its way through the bustling streets and soon faded away. The smaller figure took the other way. Soon, they were just another one of the millions of people in the city. The fear of punishment bit through like the cold night air, but what was wrong with their coat of lies if it kept them warm?
