Chapter 6

“So where am I staying? Local hotel?” Evan asks.

“You’re staying in my guesthouse. The elders thought it would be better if you were somewhere I could keep an eye on you at all times,” Rene replies.

“You guys really don’t trust humans here, do you?” Evan asks. He’s also less surprised that Rene is pissed at him being here. Evan doesn’t think he’d want a stranger staying on his property. But at least Evan is in the guesthouse, not the guest bedroom.

“We’ve been given plenty of reasons not to,” Rene says simply.

“I’m sorry. Saying not all humans are like that doesn’t help and doesn’t make what some of us do any less awful.” Evan doesn’t understand the cruelty, but then, he’s never hated someone for their skin color, religion, or species.

Rene doesn’t talk as he drives, and Evan doesn’t feel like having a one-sided conversation, so he just sits and watches the scenery pass by. It’s not that different from home, but it’s beautiful.
