Chapter 63

Rene doesn’t want to live in the human world. He’s getting better about humans since Evan met him, but Evan doesn’t expect miracles. It’ll be a long time before Rene trusts humans, trusts them enough to spend more than a few days here and there with them. Of that, Evan’s sure.

And Evan can’t go home with Rene. He’s not even allowed in the town without permission. They don’t even know that he killed a man, something that Evan tries not to think about.

So until Rene brings up that he needs to go home, Evan isn’t going to bring it up, either. He knows burying his head in the sand isn’t the best method, but it’s all he has for now.

Evan gets up early and goes to feed Marshmallow, who’s meowing a lot, like maybe he’s hungry. Evan’s in the kitchen, putting the food into the bowl, when he hears a noise. He turns and finds himself face to face with a gun.

There is a man dressed all in black, his face covered like a bank robber.
