Chapter 56

Rene puts the carton down and goes back to his bedroom, shaking a sleeping Evan awake.

“Everything okay?” Evan asks sleepily. He looks far too adorable for a grown man when he’s sleepy, his red hair all rumpled, his blue eyes cloudy.

“I’m probably just being paranoid, but I want you to run one of those field tests on the orange juice in the fridge. I’d swear there was an injection mark, and I can smell something weird,” Rene says.

“I’ll come look. Let me grab my kit.” Evan rolls out of bed slowly and pads barefoot to the family room, where he put his kit.

Rene heads back to the kitchen, and he’s looking in the fridge for more things with holes in them when he smells Evan’s scent, and something else, someone that has Rene spinning around fast, and then freezing.

Graham Socks has Evan pinned against the front of his body, and he’s holding the sharp end of a syringe to Evan’s neck. Evan’s blue eyes are wide, but he looks unharmed. Rene growls.
