Chapter 54

He’s in his bedroom in the guesthouse getting dressed when his phone buzzes with a text. It’s from Nanook, saying he’s at the house.

Evan says he’ll be a minute, and finishes getting dressed, smooths out his bed-rumpled hair, and returns to Rene’s home. He knocks on the door, and Rene lets him in. Evan’s passing Rene in the doorway, just the two of them for the moment, when Rene’s face freezes.

“You smell like me. My scent’s all over you,” Rene says in a low voice.

“Do you think he’ll notice?” Evan asks.

“He might be old, but I’m sure his nose still works. I was with him a few minutes, and he didn’t say anything, but he must have smelled you on me,” Rene hisses.

“I’ll come up with something. I’ll say we swapped beds because my back was hurting. That should explain it,” Evan suggests, slightly panicked.

“Would you two like to stop whispering in the hallway and come in here?” Nanook calls out
