“I think Nanook is the only one who wants me here. I know you don’t,” Evan replies. He doesn’t seem offended that Rene has shown open dislike and distrust.
“How do you know Nanook? He’s a lot older than you.” Rene can’t help but be suspicious of their friendship.
“We’re not lovers, if that’s what you’re aiming at. Nanook is as straight as an arrow, and like family to me. Well, like they tell you family is supposed to be,” Evan says, his smile faltering only for a moment. Rene wonders about that, but he’s more curious about something else
“Are you gay?” Rene asks bluntly. No one ever accused him of having tact.
