Yule Ball Begins

I awoke very suddenly on Christmas Day. Wondering what had caused my abrupt return to consciousness, I opened my eyes and saw something with very large, round, green eyes staring back at me in the darkness, so close we were almost nose to nose.

"Dobby!" I yelled, scrambling away from the elf so fast I almost fell out of bed. "Don't do that!"

"Dobby is sorry, sir!" squeaked Dobby anxiously, jumping backward with his long fingers over his mouth. "Dobby is only wanting to wish Harry Potter 'Merry Christmas' and bring him a present, sir!"

"It's okay," I said, still breathing rather faster than usual, while my heart rate returned to normal. "Just — just prod me or something in the future, all right? Don't bend over me like that…" If I hadn't realized it was Dobby, my instincts would have screamed at me to send a blasting curse.

I pulled back the curtains around my four-poster, took my glasses from the bedside table, and put them on. I turned back to Dobby, who was now standing nervously next to my bed, still looking worried that he had upset me.

"Can Dobby give Harry Potter his present?" he squeaked tentatively.

I put on a cheery smile and assured, "'Course you can." After a second, I added, "I have even got a gift for you."

I had used Hermione's SPEW obsession to my advantage and had gotten her to knit a House Elf-sized jumper for Dobby. I quickly opened my trunk, wincing at how unorganized it was, and located the woolen jumper. "Sorry I forgot to wrap it…"

But Dobby was utterly delighted. "Dobby loves this, Harry Potter!" he said, quickly throwing it over his head and fitting into it.

"Here have these too," I said, while passing him some pairs of socks.

"Socks are Dobby's favorite, favorite clothes, sir!" he said, rip ping off his odd ones and pulling on mine. "I has seven now, sir. . . . But sir . . ." he said, his eyes widening, having pulled both socks up to their highest extent, so that they reached to the bottom of his shorts, "they has made a mistake in the shop, Harry Potter, they is giving you two the same!"

Dobby now handed me a small package, which turned out to be — socks. "Dobby is making them himself, sir!" the elf said happily. "He is buying the wool out of his wages, sir!" The left sock was bright red and had a pattern of broomsticks upon it; the right sock was green with a pattern of Snitches.

"They are really well made, Dobby," I praised him, pulling the socks on, knowing it would make him happy. Dobby's eyes started leaking with happiness.

"Dobby must go now, sir, we is already making Christmas dinner in the kitchens!" said Dobby, and he hurried out of the dormitory.

After a few more hours, Ron, Neville, Seamus and Dean started waking up too. We exchanged our gifts, which admittedly, though a little reluctantly, were more satisfactory, especially Hermione's 'Quidditch Teams of Britain and Ireland' and surprisingly, Fleur's 'Les Secrets de la Magie Obscure'. Thank goodness I had not forgotten to send her a gift too.

Ron and I met up with Hermione in the common room, and we went down to breakfast together. We spent most of the morning in Gryffindor Tower, where everyone was enjoying their presents. Then we returned to the Great Hall for a magnificent lunch, which included at least a hundred turkeys and Christmas puddings, along with large piles of Cribbage's Wizarding Crackers.

In short, the day was going beautifully. But there was one thing I wasn't able to do. The entire morning I had looked for Fleur, but had been unable to find her. I don't know why but I just wanted to meet her one time before the ball… To discuss when we will meet before the ball, where we would meet and so on.

I excused myself from Ron and Hermione for a little while, receiving dirty looks from both, and started wandering through the various hallways of the mystical castle—something that had become quite a pastime for me over the last couple of months, I noted.

I haven't been in this hall. Like, I've never been in this hall. Ever. And this wasn't the only one. Hogwarts was huge. In fact, most of the dungeons were unexplored. Even the Marauder's Map had gaps there! Well, anyway.

I had been walking aimlessly, not really paying attention to where my steps were taking me. My mind drifted to the dream I had a few days ago. The triangle-shaped hole… the ghoul and fury-like creatures en masse, flying upwards from what felt like the doors of hell…

Was that Azkaban? But it looked so much… worse.

The hallway ended in a dead end. I noticed a large window and saw that some of the panes could be moved. Smiling, I lifted the pane, climbed out of the window, and started walking on the snow-covered pitched roof. After finding a decent spot, I settled down and finally took in the scenery.

It was beautiful. Simply breathtaking. The forests beyond Hogwarts' perimeter were covered in blankets of snow. The lake wasn't visible, as it was on the opposite side, but the various snow-capped peaks more than made up for it.

"I should remove one of those books and add my Firebolt to my ring," I said with a sigh, leaning my head back and letting my back rest against the snow. Twirling my ring, I summoned my wand and waved it, calling for my broom. After about five minutes of waiting, I noticed my broom zooming toward me at lightning speed, and I smiled.

A rush of adrenaline—a wonderful feeling—and I jumped off the roof, catching the Firebolt in midair and starting to fly around the mystical castle. The cold, chilly air against my skin only made the moment more beautiful. I loved flying. I dived, zoomed, twirled around, and did all kinds of maneuvers in the air.

I flew toward the lake, skimming close to its surface, ripples and waves forming as I zoomed past. The coldness of the lake and the splashes of chilly water soaked my clothes, drenching me, but the adrenaline rush remained.

I noticed Ron, Hermione, and many other Gryffindors a little way from the lake, doing something. I started speeding toward them, the wind making my hair stand on end and the cold air chilling me. I was starting to realize I was actually shivering. As I neared them, I slowed down and then dismounted my broom, but since it was still moving, my legs slid against the snow due to the momentum, and I ended up colliding with both Ron and Hermione, causing us all to fall.

We tumbled into the snow in a heap, laughter erupting from all three of us. The cold bite of the snow on my skin did nothing to stop the infectious giggles. Ron groaned dramatically, pushing himself up. "Blimey, Harry! Couldn't you land like a normal person for once?"

"Where's the fun in that?" I shot back with a grin, brushing snow off my clothes. Hermione, who was now sitting in the snow, looked between us with an exasperated smile, her cheeks red from the cold.

"You're soaked!" she said, eyeing my wet clothes. "Do you want to catch your death out here?"

I shrugged, a mischievous twinkle in my eyes. "Wouldn't be the worst way to go—flying on my Firebolt."

Hermione rolled her eyes but couldn't help smiling. Ron, on the other hand, gave me a mock salute. "Died doing what you loved, mate. Respect."

We all sat there for a moment, catching our breath and feeling the peace of the snowy landscape around us. The silence was broken only by the occasional sound of other students laughing or the soft crunch of snow underfoot as people walked by. The sun had dipped low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the winter wonderland that was Hogwarts.

Hermione looked at the sun and suddenly panicked, casting a quick Tempus charm—17:18. "Oh my God! I have to go and get dressed!" she exclaimed, jumping to her feet in a rush.

"Already?" Ron asked in disbelief, completely baffled as to why she needed to get dressed nearly three hours before the ball.

But instead of replying, Hermione darted back toward the castle, leaving Ron staring after her, dumbfounded.

"Three hours?" Ron repeated, looking at me as if I had the answers. "Three bloody hours?"

"Yes, yes," Fred said sagely, popping up beside us. "Three hours, Ronniekins," he added, patting Ron's head mockingly.

I was about to laugh when something large and cold slammed into the back of my head, sending me face-first into the snow. I groaned, pushing myself up, and turned to see George grinning smugly, already winding up for another snowball throw.

"Oh, you're gonna regret that," I muttered, raising my wand. With a swift flick, dozens of snowballs materialized in midair and launched themselves at George, pelting him one by one.

"CHEATER!" George shouted as he dodged frantically, zigzagging through the snow. He pulled out his wand, casting a shield charm, but only managed to stop a few snowballs before one particularly well-aimed one hit him square in the face.

Fred and Ron were doubled over with laughter at their brother's misfortune, barely able to stand. "Nice one, Harry!" Fred wheezed between bouts of laughter, giving me a thumbs-up.

But George wasn't about to go down without a fight. "Alright, Potter, you asked for it!" he declared dramatically, wiping snow from his face. He pointed his wand and, with a flourish, summoned an army of snowballs of his own.

And just like that, the peaceful snowball fight spiraled into full-on chaos. Every Gryffindor in the vicinity whipped out their wands, sending snowballs flying in every direction. The air was filled with shrieks of laughter and spells as we all dove for cover, launching volleys of snow at each other like it was a battle on the Quidditch pitch.

Ron managed to nail Fred in the back with a perfectly timed shot, earning a triumphant cheer. Fred retaliated by sending a barrage of snowballs back at him, forcing Ron to hide behind a nearby snowbank, peeking out just long enough to shoot back.

I ducked behind a tree, laughing as I flicked my wand to send more snowballs flying, watching as George tried—and failed—to keep up with the attacks coming his way. The snowballs zoomed past him faster than he could block, leaving him drenched in snow but still grinning ear to ear.

There was no Christmas tea today, as the ball included a feast, so at seven o'clock, when it had become hard to aim properly, the others abandoned their snowball fight and trooped back to the common room. The Fat Lady was sitting in her frame with her friend Violet from downstairs, both of them extremely tipsy, empty boxes of chocolate liqueurs littering the bottom of her picture.

"Lairy fights, that's the one!" she giggled when they gave the password, and she swung forward to let them inside.

While the others—Ron, Neville, Dean, and Seamus—started getting dressed, I quickly removed the books I had stored in my ring, which could hold up to seven items at a time. I closed the curtains around my four-poster bed and began adjusting what I needed to keep in the ring.

After a bit of deliberation, I finally settled on this assortment—my wand, the invisibility cloak, the Marauder's Map, my Firebolt, Riddle's Diary, Slytherin's Journal, and Dumbledore's Journal. These five items were essential to keep with me at all times. Well, maybe the broom and the Marauder's Map weren't absolutely necessary, but the other five… they were too important to leave unguarded, not for a second.

Satisfied with the arrangement, I picked up my dress robes for the Yule Ball, carefully stowed the various books in my trunk, and cast a few protection spells on it for good measure. Then, I opened the curtains and stepped back into the room.

All of them—Ron, Neville, Dean, and Seamus—looked a bit self-conscious, though none more than Ron, who was examining himself in the long mirror in the corner with a horrified expression. There was no denying that his robes looked more like a dress than anything else. In a last-ditch effort to make them look more masculine, he used a Severing Charm on the ruff and cuffs. It worked, somewhat. At least now he was lace-free, though the edges still looked frayed and uneven as the boys prepared to head downstairs.

"I still can't figure out how you managed to get one of the best-looking girls in the year," muttered Dean as they gathered by the door.

"Animal magnetism," Ron replied gloomily, tugging at a loose thread on his sleeve.

I sighed, twirled my ring, and waved my wand as it appeared in my hand, fixing his robes with a quick charm. The frayed edges smoothed themselves out, the seams became neat, and the robes took on a much more presentable appearance.

"Better?" I asked.

Ron glanced at himself in the mirror again, his expression softening slightly. "Yeah… thanks, mate," he muttered, though there was still a trace of embarrassment in his voice.

Neville, who had been nervously adjusting his own robes, gave Ron a reassuring pat on the back. "You'll be fine. You're going with her, after all."

"Well, I'll go get changed now," I said, opening the door to leave.

"Wait, where are you going?" Seamus asked, clearly confused.

"Somewhere," I replied vaguely, giving him a quick smile before slipping out of the common room.

I hurried down the corridors, making my way to the seventh floor. After a short while, I arrived at the familiar tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy and began pacing back and forth in front of it, concentrating on what I needed.

I need a place to change.

On my third pass, a door appeared, as it always did when I needed it most. With a sense of relief, I entered the Room of Requirement. As I stepped inside, I willed it to change to suit my needs, imagining a private dressing space, complete with a large mirror, warm lighting, and a neat rack for my dress robes.

The room complied instantly. I found myself in a spacious chamber that resembled a well-appointed dressing room. My dress robes hung neatly on a stand, the soft glow of enchanted candles casting a warm light across the space. A large mirror stood in the center, framed by intricately carved wood, and the floor beneath my feet was lined with plush carpeting.

I took a deep breath and began changing, feeling a bit more at ease in the quiet solitude the Room provided. This was one of the few places in Hogwarts where I could truly be alone with my thoughts, away from the noise and chatter of everyone else.

As I pulled on my robes and adjusted them in front of the mirror, I couldn't help but feel a mixture of nerves and excitement. The Yule Ball was just a few hours away, and although I was prepared in some ways, I still felt the pressure of the night ahead. I wasn't nervous because the entire school would be there—no, I was too used to being a lion in the circus. The nerves came from something else entirely. For once, it wasn't about magic, good or bad, or anything of that sort. This time, it was about something much more personal. It was about Fleur…

Finally dressed, I smoothed out the fabric of my robes and gave myself one last glance in the mirror. The deep green robes fit perfectly, and for a moment, I allowed myself to feel a bit of pride in how they looked. Tonight will be great; I just know it.

After one last look in the mirror, I exited the room and began heading for the Great Hall. To calm my nerves, I practiced some minor Occlumency exercises as I traversed the seventh-floor hallways and climbed down the stairs.

As I approached the Great Hall, I was struck by the stunning spectacle that awaited me for the Yule Ball. The hall had been transformed into a magical winter wonderland that left everyone in awe. The enchanted ceiling, designed to reflect the night sky, was a deep indigo, dotted with twinkling stars that sparkled like diamonds against the darkness. Snowflakes gently floated down from the ceiling, adding a touch of whimsy to the atmosphere.

Along the walls, tall evergreen trees stood adorned with shimmering white lights, their branches draped with strands of silver tinsel and sparkling ornaments that glimmered in the soft light. Tables were elegantly set with fine china, crystal goblets, and delicate centerpieces made of winter blooms such as white roses and holly, adding a festive touch to the scene.

The enchanted candles floated gracefully above the tables, casting a warm, golden glow that complemented the shimmering decorations. In one corner of the hall, a large ice sculpture of a majestic swan graced the space, intricately carved and glistening in the light, capturing the essence of the winter season.

With a smile, I took in the view and then began searching for Ron. My eyes found him animatedly talking with Padma, so I decided to let them be and exited the hall, my heart racing with anticipation.

This was why I wanted to meet Fleur once before the ball tonight. I walked out to the Hogwarts grounds and made my way to the Beauxbatons carriage, my mind racing with thoughts of her.

"Marie!" I called out, spotting the third Beauxbatons champion, along with Aleksandr, holding hands as they walked towards the Great Hall. "Aleksandr! Are you two ready for the ball?"

"Oh, Harry!" Marie looked at me, her radiant smile lighting up her face. "Yes, we were just heading to the Great Hall." Realizing that there must be a reason for my presence, she added, "What are you doing out here?"

"You two look lovely together," I said with a smile and a wink. After a moment, I continued, "Actually, do you know where Fleur is?"

"Oui, she was almost ready," Marie explained, glancing at Aleksandr. "Maybe five or ten more minutes…" She raised an eyebrow, a knowing look on her face. "Why are you asking? Wait…"

"Well, nothing. Gotta go," I said quickly, trying to keep my excitement in check. With a playful wink, I continued on my way to the Beauxbatons carriage.

As I approached the ornate carriage, my heart raced at the thought of seeing Fleur. Anticipation swirled within me, and I couldn't shake the feeling that tonight might be the night everything changed.

Feeling that I should give her something special, I twirled my finger, causing a beautiful red rose to appear, glimmering and shining in the moonlight. Finally, I knocked on the carriage door and waited.

A boy opened the door, and upon seeing me, asked curiously in a French accent, "Oh, hey… what happened?"

"Hello, can you tell Fleur that I am here?" I asked him politely.

"Oh…" He looked me up and down, his brows raising. "Harry, right?" he asked. Seeing me nod, he closed the door and went back inside.

I waited silently, gazing at the beautiful Black Lake, its chilly waters thrashing and splashing as they reflected the moon's radiant beams. The peaceful sound of the water, combined with the soft whisper of the wind, set the perfect backdrop for the moment.

Finally, I heard a clicking sound and looked up just as the carriage door opened. The beautiful, almost divine figure of Fleur Delacour appeared. She wore a stunning blue satin dress that hugged her figure perfectly, accentuating her natural beauty. The fabric shimmered under the soft glow of the enchanting moonlight, reflecting shades of deep azure and cobalt that enhanced her ethereal presence.

The dress featured delicate lace details along the neckline and sleeves, adding a touch of sophistication and femininity. The flowing skirt cascaded elegantly to the floor, creating a mesmerizing silhouette as she moved, reminiscent of a gentle wave gliding across the surface of a serene lake. With each step, the satin fabric caught the light, making her appear almost luminescent.

Fleur's long, silvery-blonde hair was styled in loose waves that framed her face beautifully, cascading down her back like a waterfall of silk. She wore a delicate silver tiara adorned with small sapphires that sparkled like stars in the night sky, further emphasizing her regal aura. Her makeup was flawless, highlighting her striking features—high cheekbones, a delicate jawline, and captivating blue eyes that seemed to shimmer with an inner light.

I felt almost breathless looking at her, feeling inadequate in comparison. She looked divine. Simply… divine.

I extended my hand, offering her the rose I had picked, and gently placed it behind her ear. A light pink hue appeared on her cheeks, which only made her beauty more mesmerizing.

I offered her my hand and gently took hers, placing a soft kiss on her knuckle as I helped her down the stairs.

"You're looking beautiful," I said, my words almost breathless and completely inadequate to describe the sight before me. She smiled happily at my words, her hands closing around mine.

"You're also looking very nice," she replied, her eyes a mix of happiness and pride. "Zough I zink I shouldn't 'ave worn such long 'eels," she added teasingly, her French lilt enhancing her charm.

I smiled and said, "Don't worry; I am not that self-conscious." Then, with a hint of humor, I added, "And if I were, height would be the second thing on my mind, after your beauty." My words felt more confident than I actually was, but I hoped they conveyed my sincerity.

As we walked together toward the Great Hall, I couldn't help but steal glances at her, my heart racing with every moment we shared. The atmosphere felt electric, and I was getting addicted to it, as if each step brought us closer to something extraordinary.

As we reached the entrance staircase, I slipped my arm around her waist, helping her ascend the steps. A slight pink burned my cheeks with heat at my own boldness.

Surprised, Fleur looked up at me, her gaze smoldering as our eyes met, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. "Merci, 'Arry," she said, leaning a little more into my arm. The closeness made my cheeks burn hotter, while she looked like she was about to start giggling.

We quickly reached the Great Hall, and to my surprise—and that of everyone else—my arm remained comfortably around her waist. As we entered, a wave of laughter and music greeted us, filling the air with an infectious energy. My heart swelled at the thought of being by her side in this magical setting.

The hall was adorned with twinkling lights and winter decorations, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that seemed to mirror the fluttering in my chest. It felt surreal to walk in with Fleur, who looked like she had stepped out of a fairy tale.

"Am I doing decently so far?" I asked teasingly, leaning closer to Fleur's ear.

"More than decent," Fleur murmured back, her warm breath against my neck sending a shiver down my spine. She planted a teasing kiss on my cheek, and feeling bold enough, I returned the favor, placing a gentle kiss on her cheek as well.

"So, you two are finally together?" a voice piped up, causing both of us to immediately try to separate. However, my hand around her waist prevented us from doing so.

"Anastasia, it… it's not like that," Fleur stammered, a small blush creeping across her cheeks, though there was a subtle hint of satisfaction in her eyes.

"So who's your date, Anastasia?" I asked, trying to change the topic and ease the sudden tension.

"Oh, don't start that," she huffed, her mood shifting slightly as she crossed her arms. "I wanted to come with Gemma, but that stupid son of a banshee Headmaster refused… So, I had to bring a lousy seventh-year named Roger Davies."

"The Ravenclaw Quidditch team captain?" I asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise.

"You know him, 'Arry?" Fleur replied, fluttering her eyelashes playfully while sending a wink to Anastasia.

"Yeah, I've seen him around. He's not bad on a broom, but I hear he's a bit of a… well, let's say he has a reputation," I said with a slight grin, trying to lighten the mood.

Anastasia rolled her eyes. "Tell me about it. I had to listen to him brag about his Quidditch skills for an entire week before the ball. You'd think he was the only player in Hogwarts."

Fleur giggled, the sound like music to my ears, and I couldn't help but smile at how easily she slipped into laughter.

"Yes, I know. He is obnoxious," I said, nodding in agreement with Anastasia. "But hey, if he annoys you too much, you can always remind him how you walked past the dragon in the first task."

A vicious smirk crept across Anastasia's face, and I noticed her eyes flicker a shade of purple for a moment. It wasn't just a glow; it was something else. Wait, is she… "Oh, I like that idea, Harry," she said, her gaze locking onto mine. Seeing my expression, her carefree attitude shifted slightly. She realized her slip up… and she realized I had caught it.

"Well, Anastasia, we'll talk to you later," I said, sending her a wink as a small reassurance that her secret was safe with me. "Do you have any idea where Krum is?"

"Why are you interested in Mr. Broody McGloomson?" Gemma, emerging from a cloud of glitter, asked dryly. She pointed toward the entrance and then got engaged in a conversation with Anastasia.

"Is that a Thermo-Regulus?" I asked Fleur, pointing at her necklace, as we started walking toward Krum and her date—Hermione. Honestly, Hermione had done a fantastic job getting ready. You could hardly tell it was her; she looked so stunning. I just hoped Ron wouldn't ruin her night. If he did, I would have to stand up for 'Mione.

Fleur's eyes lit up. "Oh~ Yes, it is." She gave a mock shudder from the cold, shifting closer to me. "To protect little old me from ze cold, you know?" she said, grinning as she pressed her curves against me.

"You will be the death of me," I said with a smile, my heart racing as her warmth enveloped me. I felt a thrill at our closeness, the kind that made the world around us fade into the background.

Fleur giggled again, her laughter lightening the atmosphere around us. "It's not just for me, you know. I 'ave to make sure you're warm too," she teased, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Right, because keeping me warm is clearly your top priority," I replied, rolling my eyes playfully. "What about the rest of the guests? Are you going to give them the Thermo-Regulus treatment too?"

"Only if zey ask nicely," she shot back, a playful pout forming on her lips.

"Nope, you are mine," I said, tickling her waist where my hands rested. She squealed with laughter, trying to squirm away from my grasp but failing as I tightened my hold, reveling in the playful moment.

"'Arry!" she exclaimed between giggles, "You're going to make me lose my breath!"

"Good! I'd like to see how you handle a little fun," I replied, my tone teasing as I finally released her, allowing her to regain her composure.

"You don't play a fair game," she huffed, but a smile lingered on her lips, her eyes dancing with amusement.

As we approached Hermione, who was engrossed in a conversation with the Bulgarian Seeker, I noticed the way she looked radiant under the soft glow of the enchanted candles. Her hair, usually frizzy, was styled neatly, and she appeared completely at ease—something I hadn't seen before.

"Hey, Hermione!" I called out, a grin spreading across my face as Fleur and I drew closer.

"Harry! Fleur!" Hermione replied, her voice brightening at our presence. "How is your night going so far? Well… Harry knew already… but I have come with Viktor." She motioned toward Viktor Krum, who stood beside her, his usual brooding demeanor softened by a hint of a smile.

"Are you enjoying the ball so far?" I asked, her eyes sparkling with genuine interest, and a small, subtle, hint that only Krum caught, because he was the only one supposed to.

"More than I expected," Hermione replied, glancing up at Krum, who nodded in agreement. "Viktor's been quite the gentleman tonight."

"Of course," Krum said, his accent thick but his words earnest. "It is a special night. You both look... wonderful." He smiled, and I couldn't help but appreciate the International seeker.

"Thanks! You look great too, Viktor," I added while Fleur also nodded.

Once everyone else was settled in the Hall, Professor McGonagall asked the champions and their partners to get in line in pairs and to follow her. They did so, and everyone in the Great Hall applauded as they entered and started walking up toward a large round table at the top of the Hall, where the judges were sitting.

Author's Note: So... Sorry for the late update... I wanted to update on sunday... but what I wrote ended up being trash... Well atleast it wouldn't have been good in this chapter. I will post it in like a few chapters... Maybe after 3 chapters it will fit the narative. Anyways, I also had to study for extra hours on sunday... so I couldn't upload. But hey, this chapter is 5000 words.

For this chapter I have used the original book, my own ideas... and Chat GPT to correct grammar. So... yeah... If you still find any mistake, just tell me

Also, thank you to everyone who told me that they likes last chapter. I didn't enjoy it, but about five to ten people in various platforms where this fic is available told me that they thought that the chapter was very nice. So yeah.

Also a special mention to Wattpad where my story was number 10 out of 200k stories for a while.
