Chapter Twelve

"Hey! Don't you dare die on me," Atticus yelled, staring at Sabrina's pale face.

"She just passed out. I think you need to take her to the hospital before the poison takes charge of her system. It seems like a new poison undergoing its test period," a passerby, who happened to hear their conversation, informed him.

Without a second thought, he brought out his phone before dialing his secretary's number.

"Bring a car to the parking lot. My wife just passed out," he instructed and hung up without waiting for Francis's complaint.

He knew Francis would be mad at him as today was supposed to be a day off for every worker of Sawyer Group, including the maids.

He hesitated before carrying Sabrina in a bridal style. He found it unimaginable that she was able to hold out for so long.

"Sir, I am here," his secretary shouted, calling out for his attention when he arrived at the parking lot.

He hurried up to Francis. Without saying a word to him, he got into the car.

"Where are we going, sir?"

"To the hospital," Atticus replied, his voice barely audible.

He would go insane if he lost his wife. He can't be known as the man whose wife died on their wedding day.

He is already a bad luck for being the reason his parents died; he doesn't want to be a reason for another misfortune.

"Sir, we are—"

Atticus did not wait for Francis to complete his statement before getting out of the car with Sabrina in his hands.

He did not bother to call for the nurse's attention; he rushed to the doctor's office he trusted.

With a single knock, the door opened.

"Look who we have here... Mr. Sawyer," the lady who used to be his rival in high school back then teased, unaware of the condition of the lady Atticus was carrying. "You even ran away from your wedding with a weirdo; you never cease to amaze me."

"You idiot, does this look like I am running away? My wife passed out because she was poisoned. I can't think of anyone who can save her aside from you. So stop ranting and come down off your high horse!" His bloodshot golden crystal eyes piercing through the lady's eyes, he shouted at her.

She bit her lips before walking up to him. She examined Sabrina's purse before informing him; "She needs to be operated on. Follow me to the emergency room."

"Though I can't assure her safety since I am the only one around. The others are enjoying their day off—"

"Angel, would you just go on with the surgery and stop ranting. Let's do that later," he urged, sounding devastated.

Angel gritted her teeth before walking behind him. After they arrived at the emergency room, he turned to look at Atticus, "Atticus, you know the etiquette. Please excuse me."

"Sure, Angel," Atticus said, trying his best not to argue with her.

He left the ER and headed to Angel's office where Francis was waiting for him.

The moment he walked inside, he punched Francis, making Francis stagger.

"Where were you when Alicia poisoned her? I clearly told you to protect her. I told you to use the company's security workers!" Atticus finally let out the anger he held back when he was in the car.

"I am sorry. I should have reported to you," Francis paused briefly, rubbing his aching cheeks. "Sabrina said she doesn't want any guard. She feels uncomfortable having one around since she hasn't lived an insecure life before. She also begged me not to tell you."

"That ingrate, I can't believe she doesn't know how to appreciate," Atticus whined.

He decided not to talk about the issue anymore while waiting for Angel's presence. He would talk about what to do about Alicia after Sabrina wakes up.

"Oh, I almost forgot, your grandpa called your business contact fifteen times," Francis said, stretching the phone to Atticus.

"Whatever my old man wants to tell me can't be more important than my wife's life," Atticus muttered, his gaze focused on the ceiling as if he was praying.

Seeing the strange acts Atticus had been putting up for a while now, he couldn't help but connect everything to real feelings.

No man would care about a lady he has no feelings for this way.

"Sir, can I ask you a question?"

Atticus heaved a sigh, hoping Francis won't ask him annoying questions. He did not want to dismiss his question after punching him when he was innocent.

"What is it you want to ask?" He inquired, curiosity laced in his voice.

"Do you have feelings for Sabrina? Does the one-night stand you both had ignite some spark in you?" Francis asked calmly, hoping for an honest answer.

If Atticus truly loves Sabrina, he would stop treating Sabrina as a gold digger but as his boss's lover.

Atticus's laughter drifted Francis back to reality. "What is wrong with you? Don't tell me you think all this is real? They aren't; it is just an act. I have to make everything believable."

Francis wanted to argue further but decided to accept Atticus's answer as the truth even though Atticus's voice sounded otherwise compared to his words.

They both waited for the good/bad news Angel was going to bring to them for almost two hours.

Just when Atticus's patience was running out, Angel walked in, still in her surgery dress.

"How is she?" Atticus hurried up to her before asking.

"She is lucky her name isn't written in today's book of death. The poison she took was a test poison for rodents, which was rejected at first. I already did the necessary surgery, and she is now alright, though she is still unconscious," Angel replied.

"When is she waking up?"

"You are sounding suspicious, you beast. Is she something special to you?" Her brow raised, anticipating a negative response, she asked.

Atticus chuckled at her question before replying. "I blame your parents for naming you Angel, you witch! And also, aren't you supposed to know she is my wife after mentioning that earlier?"
