“Mrs. Brannon then asked Gran point-blank if she wouldn’t have preferred that I had married and had children. Her answer caught them both off guard, I think, for she said that she would have much preferred me married and producing great-grandchildren. Furthermore, she said that she knew that both Robert and I would have preferred that kind of life as well. Then she reminded them that though she was old and from a different generation, she was also extremely well educated and well-informed enough to know that these things are not matters of individual choice. She even reminded them that experts now agree that sexual identity is established well before the onset of puberty. As I said, it wasn’t an answer that they’d expected.
