After a week of working for Ace, Charlie came into the house with a big grin on his face. I looked up from where I folded the laundry.
“What’s up?”
He pulled a drink out of the fridge. “Ace is pleased with my work. I’m starting on the grill tomorrow. Said I can have the job as long as I want.”
“That’s great! We need to celebrate.”
He pulled a drink out for me. “Yes, let’s.”
I noticed a contentment in Charlie. He woke up everyday with a smile on his face and a determination to face the day. The fact that he didn’t know who he was didn’t seem to bother him. He was content with the life he had with us.
Summer had officially begun. The days were long with the sun not sitting until close to seven o’clock. Flowers were in full bloom. The sun glistened off the waves.
Charlie joined me on my morning runs. We would pause before turning back and sit on sand to watch the seagulls dive into the waves. He asked me about my childhood in Wellport. It was a relaxing way to start each day.
