I get the popcorn from the microwave and empty the bag into a bowl. I sprinkle salt over it and walk over to the couch. Amy is sitting there with a blanket over her. I set the popcorn on the coffee table in front of the couch and bend down to untie my shoes. I kick them off and jump onto the couch next to Amy. I reach over for the blanket and drape it over my legs.
"So," I say. "The apartment was the 'perfect destination?'"
"Yes," Amy says, taking some popcorn. "It is our home."
I smile and take the remote from the coffee table. I turn on the TV and hand the remote to Amy. "It's your day, so you get to pick," I say as I get up and go back to the counter. I get our Faraway coffee we bought before coming home and pour them into mugs.
I hand Amy hers. "Your caramel cappuccino, ma'am," I say, smiling.
"Hehe, thanks, Kim," Amy says, taking the mug and sipping from it silently. She sets it on the coffee table over a coaster and picks the remote up again. I sip from my cinnamon dolce latte. Amy presses some buttons on the remote and goes to live TV. She goes to the kids movie channel.
"Ah, kids movies!" I say, taking a coast from the coffee table and setting my mug on it.
Amy giggles and looks around. We wait for a minute as the commercials finish up. Alice in Wonderland is playing. She rests her head on her shoulder and curls up next to me.
After a while, I feel something hit my shoulder. I look down, and see Amy, sleeping on me. I smile and rest my head on hers.
Soon, I'm falling asleep…
Asleep…
Gone…
* * *
I wake up, still on the couch. There's a bit of light shining through the curtains. It's now when I realize that Amy is on my lap. I slowly lift her up and put a pillow under her head. She moves a little bit and then goes still again. I stand up and stretch. I take my coffee mug and find that it's cold. I sigh and take both mine and Amy's mugs and dump the rest down the sink.
I go to my room and leave the door open. I open my laptop and check my mail. Inbox: 12
Wow, I only checked it like seven hours ago. That reminds me… I look at the time. 6:45. Well, that's fantastic. I sigh and start opening emails. Most of them are a heads-up that classes are starting again next week (it's towards the end of August right now). There are some from Mom and just a couple of randoms and spams.
I sigh and close my laptop. I walk out to the kitchen again and get a sticky-note pad and a pen and start writing.
Amy,
I've gone to get breakfast. If I'm not home yet and you want to join me, I'll be at Faraway. Or just text me.
Kim
I tear the note off the pad and stick it to the coffee table. I go back into my room and change quickly into a cropped sweatshirt and throw on some jeans. I slip on my sandals and let all my wavy, blue hair down. I smile as I take one last look at Amy before opening the door and locking it.
