Prologue

"You're going to that Ranch, Claire! I mean it!" My Grandfather cracked.

I shuttered. I hadn't ever worked in a ranch before and I didn't want to now. I didn't have much of a choice; either that or back to incarceration.

I sighed, "Fine!"

My Grandfather stared at me with his soft brown eyes. He was drunk, for sure. He tapped his fingers in order on the dinning room table.

"You'll leave tomorrow morning. Pack your bags now. I expect you to be in bed after, Claire…" He ordered in a softer tone.

I did as he said; packing my bags and going right to bed after. I didn't want to upset him any further.

I listened closely hearing him crying in the room next to me.

"What did I do wrong?" He asked himself.

My heart shattered. He didn't do anything wrong; I did.
