Chapter 18 The Lawyer's Girl

Vandita woke up in the morning with a terrible headache. Clutching on her elbow, she sat up on the bed. For a moment she couldn't recall where she was. The lavish bedroom was a contrast to her convent dorm.

'The Roy Chowdhury banglow', she remembered. She shifted her sides in the soft bed when her eyes feel on the bedside table.

A glass of water with two aspirins and a small note.

' First Kiss.

First Champagne, and

First hangover.

Welcome to Adulthood.

PS: Check the Wardrobe'

Vandita took the glass in her hand and popped in the tablets, Aspirin. She looked at her oversized satin nightshirt and tried to recall the memories of the previous night. She could remember only bits and pieces and those were enough to turn her into a bright hue of red.

The watch said she had slept three extra hours and she needed to make up for the time. She looked at the heap of her clothes lying on the ground and sighed. She was yet to pick up her belongings from the convent dorm and that would leave her with no choice but to wear the muddled saree again.

She opened the wardrobe to get a towel for herself quickly before entering the bathroom, but the sight kept her rooted.

She gawked at the sarees and blouses arranged beautifully in one side of the wardrobe.

"Gosh... how!! " She gasped.

It was already past nine when Vandita finally came downstairs. She had bathed and changed. The aspirins did their work and she felt considerably fresh. She saw Batuk and Awnirudh working in the study together, rearranging the books.

Batuk saw her and shouted.

" Look Dada, she is here. I told you she'd were the blue one." He proudly announced. Awnirudh eyed her thoroughly. She looked fresh as a morning dew.

Vandita, however, cautiously avoided looking into Awnirudh's eyes. Instead she came near Batuk and wished him morning.

"Good morning Boudi. Did you like your wardrobe?" He grinned at his own question. "Dada and I went to the market early in the morning and I chose most of your sarees." He proclaimed.

Vandita smiled brightly to praise his choice.

"Good morning Vandita. Did you sleep well." Awnirudh asked her softly.

Vandita couldn't answer at once. She just nodded her head gently in agreement.

"Batuk, go and ask Koeli to fix our breakfast, will you." Awnirudh said.

Batuk chuckled meaningfully as he left the room.

Awnirudh came closer to Vandita.

"Did you have the aspirins?" He asked.

"Yes."

"And how are you feeling now?"

"Better."

Vandita was her usual self again- calm and composed. But she could see Awnirudh's bruised lips, testifying her doings from the night.

Before Awnirudh could ask anything else, Vandita turned towards him and spoke gently, yet with a distraught tone.

"Barrister Babu. What happened last night?"

Awnirudh observed her worried expression mixed with restlessness.

"Well nothing much." He said. " You ate 9 Rosogullas and went off to sleep peacefully. I slept on the couch guarding you."

Vandita couldn't sense his comical tone.

" I'm sorry for my last night's behaviour. As far as I could remember, I was behaving erratically." She hung her head low in embarrassment.

" Well Vandita , you don't have to apologise for eating Rosogollas you know. Your wish is my command. But Batuk is still unaware that his share of Rosogullas are missing."

Vandita finally smiled and Awnirudh felt a heavy stone to be lifted from his chest.

He pulled out a folded document and a small box.

"Vandita, I wanted to give you these last night. But... "He smiled. " Happy 18th. These are for you." He handed the gifts to her and asked her to open it.

"What are these?" Vandita asked rhetorically as she opened the box. She found a silver car key inside the box. The key chain read 'to the fairest of them all'.

"Barrister Babu, I possibly can't..." Vandita couldn't find her words.

"This is yours. I brought it all the way from London for you. I heard you have learnt to drive." Awnirudh took the box from her and and kept it on the table. He held her hand instead. "Besides, I wish you would take me on a ride someday."

Vandita couldn't find her words. She wasn't unhappy but felt heavy under the pressure of this extravagant present.

"And on a lighter note," Awnirudh continued, " I had a wonderful time last night. You had half a bottle champagne and your antics were amusing."

"My antics?" Objected Vandita. But before she could say anything further Kaka Babu cleared his throat.

" Good morning Kaka Sasurji." Vandita approached and touched his feet.

"Vandita beta... I hope you enjoyed the party last night." He began. "Beta, I know this is between you and Awnirudh, but you are a part of Roy Chowdhury family. And as the head of the family, I think it's my duty to remind you of the decision you are to take." He paused.

Vandita hung a head low.

" I haven't decided yet." She confessed.

"But it would be great if you could come to a decision before setting out for London." Uncle Trilochon sounded thoughtful.

"London??" Vandita asked in utter astonishment. " Who is going to London?"

"Why You? "
