"No, please, do not… I am not that crazy... do not." her sister started repeating these words and screaming hysterically.
"Calm down. All will be fine, believe me". She hugged her sister, and looked side-way at her brother-in-law.
"There is no way that I am making this up. We have two lovely girls, a twin," Her sister said and looked at her, "believe me." Her sister saw a sceptical look on her face. "You don't believe me either. Ok, I will call their school, and you will see" Her sister went to pick up the phone and call.
"It is almost midnight. Don't call anyone at this time" He pulled his wife away from the phone, and then he looked at his sister-in-law. "See, she will call and scare people. See what I am facing daily. She is your sister; handle her, please! I am fed up."
He looked back at his wife. "Prepare yourself. Tomorrow you will be admitted to the hospital."
Then he left the room.
Her sister looked at her and said in a low voice, "Believe me; I am not crazy. There is no way I am that crazy to imagine having girls...You know what, let us go to my doctor's clinic tomorrow. She will confirm that I gave birth to two girls. I will prove him wrong."
"But dear, why he will act like this." She wondered.
“Well, you know he never loved me. You know better than me.” Her sister looked at her checking how she would react.
“Let us not talk about this.” She cut her and looked down, avoiding her sister’s eyes.
“This happened, right? I am not making this up. So, I am not crazy.”
She looked at her again and said, “Of course, you are not. But you need special care; you will get better.”
“So, you believe him. For sure, you will be on his side. Your lover’s side.” Her sister‘s tone was louder now. Her sister let go of her weak face, and she looked fiercely at her.
“Stop it. I am trying to help you here. I took days off from work and came running to help you. And this how you think? You are still the same—a selfish, spoiled person. You know what? I am packing; I am leaving now.”
She got up, but her sister grabbed her leg and begged her to stay. “No, please, I am sorry… I really I am... not only for today, for everything.”
She pulled herself together again and then asked, “How do you want me to help you?” She asked firmly.
Her sister was still holding her leg, and when her sister made sure that she would stay, she moved away and sat on her chair.
“Well, he is trying to prove to everybody that I am not well, so that I will be in a mental hospital. Then, he will be able to marry the bitch he loves.”
“So, for sure, he loves another woman.”
“Yes”
“Do you know whom?”
“Well, in the beginning, I thought he loves the maid.”
“That is crazy.” She said with a weird look at her sister, as if she was wondering how such an idea would come to her sister’s mind.
“That is what I thought at first because of the way he acts with her. How he sent all the maids away, but her.”
Her sister came closer and whispered. “He did so because he does not want anyone to talk about me and my madness; this is his excuse. But then I heard him talking to someone over the phone, around a week ago. Telling her, I cannot wait to finalize everything and be together.”
Then, her sister adjusted her seat and said, “When I confronted him, he also came up with the idea of me imagining things. He is smart; he will not get divorced. He will prove that I am mentally ill so that he will be officially the guardian over my fortune.” Her sister noticed a change on her face.
“But dear, you could not see his mother today.” She said with hesitation, and again she avoided looking directly at her sister’s eyes.
Her sister stood still, and tears kept coming out of her eyes. She answered in a low voice, “Yes, I know.”
“One more thing, sister, the last time I met Mom. I mean, your mom. It was after your accident where you miscarried. She told me how desperate you were, especially after knowing that you will never be able to give birth again. So I am not sure how you had twin girls.” She noticed that a puzzled look took over her sister’s face.
“What accident? I never miscarried.” Her sister said so and kept gazing at her.
She looked at her sister, and she saw how scared she looked. She felt something must be said to comfort her sister. Something that would make her sister feeling better.
“Listen, the only way to help you is by taking you to the centre tomorrow.” She touched her sister’s hands gently and said, “You are the only family I have now. It is true, we were not close recently, but still, you are my lovely sister, whom I share with the best memories ever. You will go to this centre, get your proper treatment, and then come and live with me. Leave him if you are not happy; it is clear you are not. You are rejecting him, his life, and everything to do with him. You have created a better life to escape your life with him.” She said, and rested her eyes directly on her sister’s.
Her sister nodded, agreeing with her, wiped her tears away, and hugged her.
She wished her goodnight.
At night, while she was in her bed restless, she kept thinking, “God, what I am doing...why I came here.”
She got up, went to the balcony. She looked at the sky, trying to breathe and getting fresh air... God, it is not easy to be here again... so hard. So hard to handle.
He was looking up at her balcony from the garden. For the first time, he noticed how beautiful his house was, and for the first time in a very long time, he enjoyed the fresh air. For the first time in a very long time, he felt living.
On the upper floor, her sister stood in front of the window, looking at her husband and his old true love. A tear dropped down her face. She wiped it and went to her bed.
In the morning, after having their breakfast together. Her brother-in-law kissed his wife on her forehead. "Get ready by 4 O'clock to take you to the centre. Your bags are ready." He said.
She looked at her brother-in-law and then said, "Actually, I was thinking last night. Since I still have two days off, I would like to spend these days with my sister. And then she can be admitted to the centre."
He looked at her, "but we agreed."
"I know, but two days will not harm…" she looked sharply at him.
He did not like what she suggested, but he had no other option but to agree.
"Well, I guess we will all have supper together then." He faked a smile and left.
"I appreciate this. I know sooner or later I will have to go to the centre, but this means a lot to me. Thanks". Her sister said.
“I was thinking about what you told me yesterday. Still, I believe you need medical attention, but I feel he may use this for his benefit, and he may not get you out of there at all."
Her sister adjusted her seat, and she was all ears. "Yes, maybe, so what to do now?" Her sister asked and moved closer to her.
"I have an idea. I have a friend whom I trust pretty well, and he is a lawyer. I sent him a message yesterday explaining the situation. He suggested a solution, and I believe this may be a good one."
"What did he say?" Her sister eagerly asked.
"Well, since you cannot ask for a divorce now because you are sure he will refuse. So, what my friend suggested is to sell all your properties to someone else. Someone you trust. After you leave the centre, this person will give you back your property. But we need to complete this before getting any medical reports. Have you ever been to a doctor before?" She asked.
"No, well, at least that is what I remember." Her sister replied.
"I guess not, because your husband yesterday mentioned you never listened to him. Great, so I believe you can sell everything to your mother." She said.
"But you know, she is not well. She is in the Alzheimer's centre. With her situation, it will be easier for him to reclaim it back."
"Oh yea, you are right."
"But I can sell all to you." Her sister said and checked her reaction.
"No, leave me out of this, please." She said firmly.
"I have no other person to trust. Please don't leave me in the middle… you promised to help me, and you still consider me your sister. If my fortune is looked after by you, I will be relieved. I am sure you will take good care of my daughters", then she paused for a while, "if they exist, I mean." She said.
"Let me think about it; I am not comfortable." She avoided catching her sister’s eyes.
"There is no time, please. If you agree, we can finalize everything today.” Her sister sounded eager to have it done at once.
She noticed how her sister looked sincerely worried, so she had to agree and said, "Hmmm, promise me you will get better soon and leave this centre."
"I promise." Her sister's eyes sparkled.
"I will call the lawyer now and see what is required and how to do it."
She left her sister, and went to talk to the lawyer.
Her sister leaned comfortably at her chair, and felt, for the first time in a very long time, free.
