Yet to come

Alex's breath hitched as the familiar figure stepped into the light. Their eyes widened in shock, disbelief clawing at their mind.

It was Dane.

But that wasn't possible. Dane was supposed to be dead. Alex had seen him fall, his body crushed beneath the rubble after that disastrous mission in New York. It had been years since they'd even dared to say his name out loud, burying the memory deep in the recesses of their mind. Yet here he stood, alive and very much breathing, with that same unsettling smile that had always made Alex's skin crawl.

"You…" Alex whispered, the word barely audible over the pounding of their heart.

Dane took another step forward, his movements slow and deliberate. "Surprised to see me?" His voice was the same as Alex remembered—smooth, almost charming, but with an edge that promised violence.

Jim's eyes were fixed on him, his grip on the gun tightening. "How the hell are you still alive, Dane?"

Dane chuckled softly, a sound that sent a chill down Alex's spine. "You really thought a little rubble could take me out, Jim? You should know by now that I'm not that easy to kill."

Shadow, still standing at the back, shifted slightly, his hand resting on the weapon at his side. "What do you want?" he asked, his voice cold and measured.

Dane's smile widened, but his eyes remained dark, unreadable. "I want what I've always wanted—control. Power. And you…" His gaze flicked to Alex, a predatory gleam in his eyes. "…you're the key to all of it."

Alex took a step back instinctively, their mind racing. What was he talking about?

"I don't know what you're talking about, Dane," Alex said, trying to keep their voice steady. "I'm not part of this. I don't know what you want."

Dane's smile faltered for a moment, his eyes narrowing. "Oh, but you are part of this, Alex. You've always been part of it. You just didn't know it."

Jim moved closer to Alex, shielding them with his body as he leveled the gun at Dane's chest. "Back off, Dane. I don't care how you survived or what game you're playing, but if you think you can waltz in here and take what you want, you're dead wrong."

For a moment, the tension was so thick it was almost suffocating. The air between them crackled with danger, as if a single wrong move could set off an explosion. Alex's heart raced, their mind screaming at them to run, but their feet were frozen in place.

Then, Dane's eyes shifted, glancing briefly at Shadow before returning to Jim and Alex. "You think you know the Syndicate," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "But you've barely scratched the surface. This… this is bigger than you can imagine."

He paused, his gaze piercing into Alex's soul. "And you, Alex, whether you like it or not, are the center of it all."

"What do you mean?" Alex demanded, their voice trembling with a mixture of fear and anger. "What the hell does that mean?"

Dane's smile returned, slow and deliberate, as if savoring the moment. "Oh, you'll find out soon enough."

Before anyone could react, Dane's hand shot to his side, pulling out a small device from his pocket. There was a brief moment of confusion, then a blinding flash of light filled the room, followed by a deafening explosion.

The world spun. Alex hit the ground hard, their ears ringing from the blast. The explosion had knocked them off their feet, sending debris flying in all directions. For a moment, everything was disorienting—the lights, the sounds, the chaos. Alex blinked, trying to clear their vision, but all they could see were blurred shapes moving through the smoke.

"Jim!" they shouted, their voice barely audible over the ringing in their ears. Panic surged through them as they struggled to get to their feet. "Jim, where are you?"

A hand grabbed their arm, pulling them up. Alex spun around, expecting to see Jim, but instead, they were met with Shadow's masked face. His visor was cracked, and there was a cut on his forehead, but he was still standing.

"Move," Shadow barked, his voice harsh and urgent. "We've got to get out of here."

"But Jim—" Alex began, their voice breaking with fear.

"He'll find us," Shadow interrupted. "But we can't stay here. It's a trap."

Alex's mind raced, torn between the need to find Jim and the raw instinct to survive. The smoke was thick, and the scent of burning debris stung their nose. Somewhere in the distance, they could hear the faint echo of gunfire. Dane's people were here.

With no time to think, they let Shadow pull them forward, their legs moving on autopilot. The two of them sprinted through the smoke-filled clearing, the chaos of the explosion still echoing behind them. Alex's heart pounded in their chest, fear clawing at their throat. Was Jim okay? They hadn't seen him after the blast, and the uncertainty gnawed at them.

They ran for what felt like an eternity, the trees around them a blur as they navigated through the dense forest. Shadow moved with precision, leading the way as if he knew exactly where they were going. Alex followed blindly, their mind too overwhelmed to process anything beyond the need to keep moving.

Finally, after what seemed like hours, they reached another clearing, this one smaller and more secluded. A small, hidden bunker sat nestled against a rocky hill, barely visible from the forest. Shadow wasted no time, pulling open the metal hatch and motioning for Alex to follow.

"In," he ordered, his voice leaving no room for argument.

Alex didn't hesitate. They climbed down the narrow ladder into the bunker, their legs trembling with exhaustion. The small space was dimly lit, with a single table and a few chairs scattered around. It wasn't much, but it was safe—or at least safer than out there.

Shadow followed them down, closing the hatch behind him. For a moment, the only sound was their ragged breathing as they tried to catch their breath.

"Where's Jim?" Alex asked, their voice shaky. "Did he—"

"He'll be fine," Shadow said, though his tone was flat, unreadable behind the mask. "He's survived worse."

Alex slumped into one of the chairs, their mind reeling. Dane was alive. The Syndicate was closing in. And somehow, they were at the center of it all.

"I don't understand," Alex whispered, more to themselves than to Shadow. "Why me? What do they want with me?"

Shadow was silent for a moment, his visor reflecting the dim light in the bunker. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, almost reluctant.

"It's not just you, Alex. It's your bloodline."

Alex's heart skipped a beat. "My bloodline? What are you talking about?"

Shadow hesitated, as if weighing how much to reveal. "The Syndicate… they've been after your family for generations. You're the last one. The only one who can access what they need."

Alex's mind spun with questions. What could the Syndicate possibly want from them?

"But I don't have anything," Alex said, shaking their head. "I'm nobody. I don't have any power, any connections—"

"You're more important than you realize," Shadow interrupted, his tone firm. "And that makes you dangerous. To them, and to us."

Before Alex could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed from above. Shadow's hand flew to his weapon, his body tense.

The hatch creaked open slowly, and Jim's face appeared, battered but alive. Relief flooded through Alex as they sprang to their feet.

"You made it," Alex breathed, their voice filled with a mixture of disbelief and gratitude.

Jim gave a tired grin, though his eyes were wary. "Barely. But we've got a bigger problem."

Alex's stomach twisted with dread. "What now?"

Jim's smile faded, replaced by grim determination. "Dane wasn't working alone. There's an entire team coming for us. We've got to move. Now."

Just as Jim spoke, the distant hum of engines echoed through the forest, growing louder by the second. Alex's blood ran cold as they realized what it meant.

The Syndicate wasn't done. And they were getting closer.
