Rick convinces Beau to take him along when he leaves town -- thus working his way into Beau's dangerous life on the run -- and perhaps, into his heart, if Beau can come to grips with the fact that Rick is half his age. Chapter 18

“Now we get a different car?” Rick asked.

“Yep.” Beau considered the options. Since they weren’t planning on sticking around, he didn’t have to worry about someone realizing their car was missing until they were well gone—as long as he chose the right place to steal from. In the end, he decided on a long-term parking garage in the heart of the city. When they got to the top level, he found a spot to park, and then they began walking down the aisles.

“Look for one with a layer of dust, for starters,” he told Rick. “Preferably an older model. When you find one, check the wheel-well. Lots of people keep a spare key there in one of those magnetic boxes.”

“I know,” Rick replied.

Most of the cars didn’t meet Beau’s specifications. It wasn’t until he got close to the end of the aisle farthest from the ramp that Rick found one which did. He gave a sharp whistle, since they were the only two up there, beckoning for Beau to join him.
