Chapter Ten: You're the Elder, I Must Yield to You
Chen Bo's face showed a hint of apprehension. Because of what Gu Qinghe had said, Chen Bo had always thought it was just some angry words spoken in the heat of the moment. But he didn't expect Gu Qinghe to be so serious about asking him to plan this matter.
You know, this is a matter of killing a thousand enemies and harming oneself by a hundred.
"Master, are you really sure about this?" Chen Bo tentatively asked. "Shouldn't we wait a bit longer, or perhaps consider other options?"
Gu Qinghe shook his head. "No need. My mind is made up."
Chen Bo continued, "But those two people, although not your biological children, have been raised by you since they were young. They're like family, and as you mentioned before, if we go through with this plan, the venerable Gu Group, which has stood unyielding in the business world, may be destroyed in the process."
Thinking of those two individuals, Gu Qinghe's face couldn't help but twitch. His body trembled slightly. "Can those two even be considered human? They're like two wolves, ungrateful and treacherous."
"I provided them with the best food, the best education, but they, for their own selfish interests, caused the death of my own son. If it weren't for the sake of protecting Chenxi, I would have acted long ago."
"Now that Chenxi has found a refuge, I no longer wish to endure. As long as Chenxi lives a good life in the future, I don't mind sacrificing everything, including my own life."
If Lin Rui were present to hear Gu Qinghe's words, he would surely be very surprised. According to the original plot, Gu Qinghe did indeed know that his two stepsons were responsible for the death of his own son, but Gu Qinghe chose to endure it until he learned that Gu Chenxi was feigning madness and stupidity, before joining forces with her to seek revenge. But because of Lin Rui's presence and his intention to marry Gu Chenxi, the story took a different turn. Gu Qinghe decided to act ahead of schedule.
Gu Qinghe's decision to act ahead of schedule was because he believed that Gu Chenxi had found a protector, and the Lin family might be able to protect her. Without this worry, he had nothing to fear.
In reality, at this point, although Gu Qinghe was still the head of the Gu Group on the surface, the real power of the group had already begun to flow into the hands of his two stepsons. This was why Chen Bo was worried and advised him to make more preparations.
However, Gu Qinghe understood better than anyone else that these two treacherous individuals, who had conspired to murder his own son, were beyond redemption. If he didn't act early, he might soon lose the opportunity to act at all.
But what both Chen Bo and Gu Qinghe knew was that to accomplish this, the entire Gu Group might ultimately collapse, and even the great establishment might fall.
So when Chen Bo said that this was a plan that would kill a thousand enemies but also harm oneself, it wasn't an exaggeration.
"Master, I understand your reasons for choosing to act," Chen Bo said. "Because Miss has found a refuge, perhaps the Lin family might be able to protect her. But you also have to think about yourself. I've been with you for forty years. The pain of losing a child is indeed unbearable for you. But you're alive, isn't it better to wait for the law to punish them?"
Gu Qinghe shook his head vigorously. "No, these two scoundrels I raised, they're the source of my sin. I must end this feud with my own hands."
"Chen Bo, you don't need to persuade me anymore. Do as I say, and after it's done, go back to retire in Qingzhou. Never return to Tianfu again. I'll handle the rest myself."
Chen Bo fell to his knees in despair. "No, Master, you can't drive me away. Even if I have to die, I, Chen Bo, will accompany you to the end."
"My old friend, why bother?" Gu Qinghe shook his head gently, feeling deeply moved.
Then Gu Qinghe shifted his gaze to the two figures still playing in the yard.
Watching them frolic, a gentle smile appeared on Gu Qinghe's face.
"Bring Lin Rui to my study later. I want to have a chat with him."
With that, Gu Qinghe left the room.
Watching Gu Qinghe's aged and weathered figure, Chen Bo's eyes became slightly moist.
Half an hour later, Lin Rui followed Chen Bo to Gu Qinghe's study.
At that moment, Gu Qinghe was copying calligraphy at his desk.
"Hello, Grandpa Gu!" Lin Rui greeted at first. However, Gu Qinghe seemed intentionally unresponsive, neither responding nor nodding.
Lin Rui greeted a second time, but Gu Qinghe still did not react, continuing to quietly copy the calligraphy.
Lin Rui didn't utter a third greeting. Instead, he chose to sit silently in the nearby chair.
Without speaking or making a sound, he eventually closed his eyes to rest.
Gu Qinghe still did not pay him any attention.
This situation persisted for about half an hour.
Finally, it seemed that Gu Qinghe had finished copying a piece of calligraphy.
Then he laughed heartily at Lin Rui, "Not bad, kid. Not only can you endure patiently, but your skin is thick enough too."
"Now that I've finished copying this piece, let's talk about the real issue."
As he spoke, Gu Qinghe kept his eyes fixed on Lin Rui.
But Lin Rui, with his eyes still closed, spoke slowly, "You're the elder, so I must yield to you. I waited for you for half an hour. How about this, you wait for me for twenty-nine minutes. I'll rest for a while first, and after twenty-nine minutes have passed, you can call me."
For a moment, Gu Qinghe was taken aback. But a smile, long unseen, appeared on his face.
