“Dani, as you will eventually learn, thousands of lives would be at stake if some of my family secrets became known. Now, do you both swear?”

“Of course,” Marco said. “What’s discussed in this room stays in this room. Period… unless Dani and I are alone in our room.”

“Absolutely,” I said. “I would never do anything to place Marco in danger.”

“Well said, both of you. Now what is it that you wish to talk about?”

“I’m going to ask you one question, Father,” Marco said, “and I want a full and complete answer.”

“What is your question?”

“Before I ask it, let me fill you in on some background. Dani, tell him about your DNA studies.”

I went into some detail, explaining the DNA database I’d been building on patients in the hospital over the years, then I told him about the vials of blood from the fifties, and how I had added them to my database.

“Good,” Marco said, “now tell him about my brother.”
