The One Who Couldnt Tell

There was a girl who lived across the street from me. The sad part is, no one actually knew her or even knew that anyone was living in that house. I heard rumours that she killed herself, or that someone ran her over on Hwy 81; Another tale I wouldn't believe. I searched her name and her family background coming across something that no one cared to know or even try to find on the computer when they made horrible accusations about that family.

The truth was, the girl whose name was Julia Hilt, age 18, was killed because of some disease that she had that was passed down from her family in 2012; at least that's what I was made to believe; since it's sitting right in front of my face. The reason no one ever knew that they lived in that house was that the family didn't have a reason to. They never liked people, and so they despise them, ever since the world has changed. The article, which I always pull up on my computer, is about the family on the day they all disappeared after the parent's daughter died.

The mother whose name is Ashley Hilt, the Father who is John Hilt, was killed almost the same way the girl did about five years later. I knew some things about them, since my mom always, and I do mean always, spoke about them like they were Saints.

But what no one actually knew about the three of them, since they kept moving from country to country from something they were trying to get away from...the bad part is that the people were to be blamed. Robbery, murder, and suicide were everywhere around them so they had no choice but to move. Blame the people who caused it; or maybe the world, I really I don't care, since nothing so far scared my family off.

I stared at the screen and the quotes that were used by the mother and the father, talking about how they loved their daughter and how they want to find out what could have happened to her. There wasn't anything about what Julia said; maybe she didn't have the time.

I blinked out of my deep thought as I was staring at the computer. I moved away from my computer to look at the house again. It was abandoned many years ago, 15 yrs actually, making strangers joke about that house. Some never tried to rent it or own it... I mean who would when that house was all that remained of death....by accident of course...Maybe. Strangely, I was the only one who knew the truth about that family; no one else did since there's a reason for it.

My name is Rosalinda Anderson but call me Rose for short. I'm nineteen years old, living in a two story house with two younger brothers, Vance, and Jake, with my mother, Sally. I and my brothers never knew our father since our mother never spoke about him; the reason was, she just didn't want to talk about it. I'm a senior in High School, and so school was ending soon for me. I need to do adventurous things before I'm shipped off to college away from my family. For my whole entire life, I haven't moved from my house in Wisconsin, and now I figured out why. This town was full of mysteries and every person wants to find them out; which they can do.

" Rose the bus!", screamed one of my brothers.

I turned to look at the clock that was sitting on my tv stand and it read, 6:45 am. I rolled my eyes. They always forget I leave at 6:49 am. I left my room, down into a short hall, down some stairs and into the living room. I sighed, brushing my hands through my long dark brown hair, and picked up my backpack, slinging it over my two shoulders, setting my purse back on top of my right shoulder. I headed to the door, either through I'll be a bit early, ( all thanks to my brothers) and said my goodbyes to both of them who were watching tv early.

My mom was still asleep in her room. I opened the door, stepped out and then closed it. I released my hand around the knob and headed down my block to my bus stop. As I walked, it was a bit windy, so I was glad I was wearing my purple Vikings sweater with dark blue jeans. I finally came to my bus stop and looked to my left to see no signs of a bus.

Those liars, I thought.

I sighed once more and took out my headphones, putting them in my ears and turned on the music. I sang quietly to the music as I waited. About three seconds in, I made my eyes move in front of me from looking to my left, and suddenly jumped a bit from seeing a blonde girl standing on the other side of the street. She stared at me with a smile. She was wearing a blue dress, with white shoes along with a small clutch purse that was orange.

Strange taste, I thought.

" Can you keep a secret Rose?" she asked.

Her voice sounded like it was being carried with the wind that was hitting my face. Somehow, her voice went through my earphones making the music continue playing, while her words whispered in my ears clearly. I widened my eyes as I saw her nod her head as she knew I would say yes.

But what exactly was the secret? I questioned.

She pointed to something behind me, and I turned to see her pointing to my house. She was pointing upwards a bit, indicating my room. I turned back to her.

" Your computer must be kept a secret of my life-story. It's not what you see or hear but what you can know from me; my secret," she said and disappeared when I blinked after her words.

" What on earth was that...don't tell me that was-," I whispered.

I heard screeching, cutting off my unfinished words, and I turned to my left to see the bus approaching me. I blinked once more, and it stopped in front of me, opening it's two black framed glass doors. I stepped on, having a greeting from my bus driver, and then sitting by my best friend, Amanda Pauley. I was slightly scared and a bit shook up from what just happened in 30 seconds time. I stared out my friend's window to my left and saw the girl once more.

" Keep my secret until then. You will find out about it," she mouthed to me, as the bus drove off towards school passing her still smiling face.

Very creepy, I thought as I returned my gaze forward staring at the bus seat in front of me.

Arriving at Eastern High, where all students from 9th to 12th went to, I stepped off the bus in a daze, not even listening to Amanda. I felt a hard tug on my sweater, making me stop. I turned.

" Rose what's wrong with you? You're completely ignoring me," she said making her brows furrow. I chuckled inside as my face stayed blanked at her.

" Sorry, I'm just thinking," I replied and started walking in the school. She followed after a moment of standing on the sidewalk looking at me. We went into the school and we went into English class. I took my seat by the window and my friend sat by me in her seat. Mr. George started talking about a book called, 'Another way' By someone. I listened for a while as he passed the books out, and then I looked at the cover. It showed a bridge with a dark figure on that bridge while fireworks were shown in the background.

Interesting cover, I thought.

" Hey Rose...they're still talking about that dead girl," Amanda whispered, looking at these boys who were looking at some website with the girl and her parents.

I sighed deeply. I heard some strange noise to my left, and so I turned my head to the window. I almost screamed because that girl was staring into the classroom at me. She had her face pressed against the glass with her hands pressed along it too. She stared at me, and then at the boys. I gulped as her face changed into a scowl. I heard a splintering noise, and suddenly the boys were yelling about their computer being broken. I turned to see that the computer was black, with a crack in the middle.

" This won't end well if everyone is wondering about her family and herself," I thought. I turned to look at the girl again, but...she was gone. This isn't my imagination I'm sure.
