Chapter 9: Night Moves

Rows of cars crammed tightly in the parking lot when they arrived.

Chris let out a slight growl as he circled the lot for the third time. "There are no good spots anywhere," he complained.

"Just park in the back, I'm sure we'll still see it just as fine." Monica pointed to a space in the far back of the lot.

Chris pulled into the spot, just as the movie was just beginning to play on the giant screen. As the credits began to roll, Monica took out her bag. "Good thing I brought candy. Want any, Hon?" She handed a bag of M&Ms to Katrina.

"Uh, no thanks. I'm good," she replied.

Katrina looked over at all the cars, her eyes widened as she spotted a familiar vehicle. "Alright, I'll meet you guys back here after." She said as she hopped out of the truck.

"See ya." Chris waved before shoving a handful of M&Ms into his mouth.

It was hard to even think with how loud the volume was. As Katrina strode through the lines of cars, she eventually approached the yellow Ford Maverick. Crouching down to face the window, she could see Adrian sat in the driver's seat, his face blank as his eyes glued to the screen. She giggled as she opened the door, letting herself in.

"Hey," she smiled.

Adrian stopped and stared for a moment, startled by her sudden appearance.

"Oh, hey." He smiled back.

"This is a nice car, is it yours?"

"Uhh…" he chuckled, "no, actually it's my parent's. I may or may not have taken it without their knowledge."

Katrina raised her eyebrows, "you stole your parent's car?"

"Well, I mean, 'stole' is a strong word. I prefer 'embezzled.'"

"That still means stole, Adrian."

"Oh. Well then I don't know, I guess I am a rebel."

They both laughed to each other before going quiet. The screen went dark as the title 'Halloween' appeared in bold orange letters.

"Oh, I almost forgot," Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out two packs of Pop Rocks. "Got these at the 7/11 on the way here, I'm not sure if you like them but…"

"Yeah, I love Pop Rocks." Katrina said with a smile.

"Cool. The red ones are my personal favorite but you can take your pick."

"It's alright, I like the blue ones." She opened the packet and dropped a handful in her mouth, laughing at the tingling sensation.

Adrian chuckled as he popped a handful with her. "I can hear yours all the way over here."

"Same with you!" Katrina laughed.

The two could barely pay attention to the movie as they took turns listening to the crackling and popping through each other's open mouths.

"Hey, I have an idea. Come with me..."

"Wha-" before she could respond, Adrian opened the door and pulled himself onto the top of the car.

Katrina stepped out of her seat, shaking her head as she stared up at him.

"Come on, I don't bite." He gave a sly smile as he reached out his hands.

She hesitated, but let out a breathy chuckle as she took his hands,

Pulling her up to the roof.

The temperature felt like it had dropped ten degrees since they were inside.

"Ooh," Katrina curled up, hugging her knees as she shivered.

"It's cold tonight."

"Yeah, the weather seems to be weird here."

Adrian looked over to see her rocking back and forth as she kept shivering.

"Here, take this." He took off his leather jacket and wrapped it over her shoulders.

Katrina looked at him with grateful eyes. "Are you sure you don't need it?"

"This shirt's pretty thick, I think I'll be fine." He gestured down to his orange woven sweater.

"Oh. Well, thank you."

"Don't mention it."

A blood-curdling scream from the movie made Katrina flinch, she had almost forgotten where they were at.

After about fifteen minutes had passed, the film didn't seem to grasp her attention any longer.

She couldn't help as her eyes drifted past the screen and towards the dark field next to the parking lot.

She tapped Adrian's shoulder, pointing to the dark area.

"You see that field over there? That's the pumpkin patch,"

"Really?" Adrian gasped.

"Yeah, I love that place. When this is done I need to show you, it's really cool."

"Why not go now? This movie's boring anyway."

Katrina thought for a moment before letting out a chuckle.

"Alright," she looked at him, "let's go…"

The two hopped off the car and headed for the field…
