The Novel's Shadow

After dying, I opened my eyes to a new world, the world of a novel. With a new identity of a side character called Keith Devans, I will work in the shadows and help the protagonist whenever it is needed. Even with such a dream, the world of the novel is still dangerous for a side character like me so using the knowledge of the novel and obtaining some skills and talents I will become one of the strongest. Or so I hoped.

Interrogation (1)

[Union's HQ][Iris]

[ENEMY ATTACK! ENEMY WITHIN THE CAMP! ENEMY ATTACK!]

After the alert, we all instantly stood up and headed in the direction of the alarm.

I, Bres, and Leo were the fastest and soon enough I could see a group of knights holding someone down.

A soldier approached us and Leo asked him, "What's the situation?"

"One enemy which is confirmed to be a demon has teleported into our base, the most notable traits are his two horns and he is also wearing a fox mask, commander", The soldier responded.

"The appraiser, huh?", Leo muttered.

After arriving I was able to spot a kid and as the soldier said, he had a fox mask and two horns on his head, but he was also wearing a white suit and a beret hat. He also had black gloves in his hands and it was clear that he was wounded.

The kid had some sort of marks on his neck and also seemed exhausted.

Bres who still seemed angry about Lashar said, "We should kill him"

To this both me and Leo told him, that it would be better to interrogate him first to which he agreed.

I arrived before him but just as I was to speak, his head dropped and it seemed like he had passed out.

I tried to have a better look at his face but the fox mask covered half of his face so it was hard to see anything.

The chairman and Lucia soon arrived and after seeing the child, Lucia made a bitter expression.

Although I could tell that she was cold, I think she still cared about the appraiser a little bit.

The chairman was inspecting the scene and said, that It would be best to use your light chains on him and put him in a cell.

Leo and Bres agreed, so I used my skill and chained his body with my skill.

Then Leo ordered for him to be taken to the cells and soon enough he was taken away by the guards.

The chairman told us to return to the main tent to have a discussion about what just had happened.

We all sat down on our spots and Leo then began to rant about the situation.

"This might be a trap or something of the sorts", He said.

"But, his injuries and state of his body didn't seem like someth-",

I was about to say that it didn't seem like a trap until Bres interrupted me and said.

"This might just be another trick, Iris, you should understand the ways of the demons better than anyone"

"Yeah but still, I don't think he is in that state because of a simple trick, and why would they send the appraiser here when he is still useful to them?"

The chairman and Lucia both seemed to be deep in thought.

And after a few seconds of silence, the chairman then started to explain that maybe, after the incident with the wizard and undead lord, Botis and the other commanders, might have thought of the appraiser as a detriment to their army and decided to kill him but he was able to escape thanks to a teleportation skill.

Bres and Leo started to deny that theory as he was a contractor that sold something to Amadeus, and that must mean that this was some sort of trap or something like that.

Lucia then stated that it would be better to interrogate him first and then come up with a conclusion about the situation and since both I and the chairman agreed, Bres and Leo didn't really have a choice.

So it was decided that when he woke up, he would be interrogated about the situation, and then we would conclude, what to do to him.

[Union's Camp Prison][Iris]

It has been three days since the appraiser arrived at our camp but he has yet to wake up after he passed out.

Both of his hands were chained against the roof and almost all of his body was covered in my light chains so as to not allow him to do anything.

I was currently waiting in front of his cell but thanks to my light chains I was able to discover some things about him.

One was that he had way more demonic energy than the other demons, even more than the dukes. Normally demonic energy is what mana transforms to after someone becomes a contractor, but in his case, it would seem like he had never used this demonic energy for anything and it just kept accumulating as demonic energy has no limits.

Demonic energy is both the fighting power of demons and also a weakness if it accumulates, that is one of the reasons why demons enjoy fighting and attacking others so much, as it helps to reduce their demonic energy.

Demonic energy is like the mana for demons and contractors, although if you were to suck all the demonic energy from a demon or contractor they would die, and it would be the same for other races and their mana.

All races have either mana or demonic energy and most is used when attacking or fighting someone but there is also a small amount that is not used for anything and can be considered as your life force.

After the attack 3 days ago, the demons didn't attack and seemed to be trying to reorganize and recover their strength, it was thanks to that, that I was able to come here every day and drain his demonic energy from him.

Most of my time here is spent draining his demonic energy and transforming it into my mana, I then use that mana on healing spells for our troops.

...

It was already going to be nighttime so I decided to leave until I noticed that he had moved his head, I stood up and opened his cell door to go inside, I was watching him carefully so as to evade any sudden moves he could make, but it wouldn't really matter as he was already chained by my skill.

He opened his eyes and lifted his head to look at me with his drowsy eyes.

He stared and me and put on a big smile like a child and started to spout many things about me.

"Ah, an angel", He said.

"I have never seen such a beautiful figure ever in my life"

He continued with his compliments but even if I knew he was still in a daze after being passed out for 3 days, for some reason, it felt like he was giving me all of his heart and that everything he said was true.

I ignored it and waited for him to finally come back to his normal self.

...

[Prison Cell][Keith]

'An angel'

I thought to myself while looking at a beautiful white-haired girl with mesmerizing blue eyes, she was wearing a nurse dress that you would find in an anime and a little nurse hat on her head.

Just from seeing her, I started to spout some nonsense about her figure and continued until I was finally able to think correctly and noticed that the so-called angel in front of me was the commander of the Union, Iris Silverwing.

She noticed that I stopped talking and finally seemed right in my mind so she asked.

"Are you finally in your right mind?"

I let out a chuckle and nodded my head.

She then took out her watch and started to text someone.

Moments after, I could hear footsteps coming from outside my cell and then I spotted a giant, an elf, a dwarf, and finally Lucia, but this time I didn't feel hatred or anything like that.

"So you are finally awake", Said the elf.

"Yeah", I responded indifferently.

He seemed pissed off but didn't do anything.

It was then that the giant came up to me to unshackle my hands, and after doing so, he lifted me up by my back, almost as if I was a bag.

He took me outside my cell and I was told that we would be heading towards an interrogation room.

I already knew I was going to be questioned in front of a lie detector skill user, as they were what was always used during the need of getting important information.

This was also the way in which the organizations leading a society could know the ranks of their individuals, this was used because some people could lie about their rank as others can't really see another person's status.

It wasn't long until we arrived at an actually good-looking and clean room, we went inside and I could see a nerdy-looking elf, a large rectangular table, and only 2 chairs, one for each side.

I sat down on the chair and the others stepped over to the other side, behind the elf.

They started to warn me about lying, as the elf had a skill for detecting lies, and they could easily catch anything that was a lie. The giant also said that if I were to lie and be uncooperative, he would kill me without any hesitation.

They then all stepped outside the room and I was left alone with the elf.

He stared at me for a few seconds and finally started to speak.

"So without any further ado, the first questions would be...."
