The Novel's Shadow

After dying, I opened my eyes to a new world, the world of a novel. With a new identity of a side character called Keith Devans, I will work in the shadows and help the protagonist whenever it is needed. Even with such a dream, the world of the novel is still dangerous for a side character like me so using the knowledge of the novel and obtaining some skills and talents I will become one of the strongest. Or so I hoped.

Author's Message: I will shorten the name demon contractors to just contractors.

"Yes, he is alright to go", The doctor said.

"Are you sure?", Monica asked.

"Yes, there is nothing wrong with his body so he just has to go home and rest, isn't that right"

I just nodded my head to his question, I was too tired to speak, and my eyes were hurting after crying so much.

Standing up, I left the infirmary, followed by Monica.

"After the incident, the school is giving the students of class S1, a 1 month long vacation so they can relax and go back to their families"

"Mhm"

"And I wanted to tell you that Arthur and the other two will be staying and training together with me so they can stronger, and I wanted to ask if you wanted to join"

I already knew that, as it was all written in the novel, and I also knew that there would also be another attack during that training arc but I didn't care, if I can't even take care of myself why would I even bother trying to help the protagonist.

"I would like to decline"

"Hmm, I thought so, anyways I wanted to ask you something"

"yes?"

"How were you able to stop them with telekinesis, I don't believe you have the mana to be able to cover 4 human bodies even if they were just teenagers"

"Yes, you are correct on your guess, I knew that as well and that's why I decided to just cover their shoes and stick them to the ground, also the reason why I passed out wasn't due to mana exhaustion but because I had a headache from controlling 8 different items"

"Hooo, anyways do you want to be my disciple?"

After not answering for a few seconds I gave her a, "No"

After saying that I decided to ignore anything else she had to say and headed for my apartment, I received many stares from other students that were looking at me quite pitifully, probably because the incident had already been spread everywhere on the news.

After reaching my apartment I sat on my bed and called mom.

We conversed about what had happened, and I told her about how pathetic I felt and how I shouldn't have joined the academy while crying, but thanks to her caring words I was able to calm down.

"...Anyways Kei, remember that, while it may be hard, didn't you have a goal in mind that you wish to achieve at all cost?"

"Mhm, I do", I said while nodding my head.

"Then keep that in mind and continue forward"

"Ok"

"Then are you gonna return home, Kei"

"No, I will do some traveling, but I will come to visit during winter break with a lot of presents so don't worry"

"Okay, Kei, be safe"

"Thanks, mom"

"Goodbye, Kei"

"Goodbye, mom"

...

After pondering for a bit, I finally came to a decision.

There was no point in me helping the protagonist in the story as at the end of the day it would just continue to advance as normal.

I only need to care about myself and my family, that's the only thing I need and I don't care if it will interfere with the story, I will be taking any resource I wish for and become strong enough to rival the protagonist.

With that out of the way I decided that soon, I would need to pack everything I had which was mostly my clothes, and some books in my dimensional pocket and head out to obtain the Item, I couldn't get before, [Mhingseng].

But that would come at a later date, I still needed to wait until Saturday to get my grimoire from Ray.

So for now, I decided to look around the shops in the marketplace.

After walking for a while, I noticed a shop called, the [Dwarves Heaven], and if I remember correctly, there were many weapons in this shop, that a contractor would buy.

I headed inside the two wooden doors to find an amazing-looking shop, the walls and almost every piece of furniture were made out of wood and there were many weapons hung on the walls giving it a kind of medieval look that you would find in a blacksmith of a manga.

I looked at the weapons hung on the walls and noticed that most of them were F ranked but I already knew that. In the novel, it was described that the owner of this place liked to display good-looking weapons with bad manufacturing while keeping good weapons in rust making them seem like garbage, and throwing them inside of a pile of bad weapons.

That's why I decided to immediately went for the pile of weapons in the corner of the room.

The contractor was an assassin and what he picked was a set of 40 rusty knives inside a bag because he was too poor to afford anything else but now they are mine,

It didn't take long for me to find them, [(S)The 40 Knives of Shi]. I grabbed the bag they were in and headed to the counter, where an old man was sleeping on a chair.

I threw the knives on the counter and the sound woke the old man up.

The old man widened his eyes and said, "Hoho, that is a great choice".

"I know", I spoke with an expressionless face.

"I see that you have some thinking to do, huh?"

I nodded at his question, it would seem he had something like an old man's intuition.

Soon he handed me back the knives and instead of being rusty, they almost looked brand new. Looking at my confused expression the old man said it was a skill and I didn't question it any further.

"How much would it be?"

"I will let you have them, kid"

"Huh?", I said out loud while wondering if this was because I passed his test.

"Just a little gift don't worry about it"

After saying that he soon disappeared into the back of the store.

I decided to put the knives inside of my dimensional pocket and head to another store that would have items for me to obtain.

And that place is the only book store in the marketplace, [Arkaic Bookstore], although it is the only bookstore in the marketplace, it is still so unpopular that no customer heads inside. Mainly because of the internet that allows us to read any book online.

But the main reason why I'm even headed there is not because of the books but because of the possibility of finding grimoires. I already know I will be able to find a martial arts book in there but it wouldn't hurt to look around for anything else that could be useful.

After walking down the street from the weapon shop, after about 5 minutes I was able to reach the store but it was not what I had expected.

It was an old worn down shop, a poster that even I don't know how it was still attached to the wall and two wooden doors. The store was actually quite bigger than most would think, as it had 4 floors.

I headed inside and noticed that the inside was just as bad as its exterior, the store was filled with a lot of worn-down bookshelves and surprisingly clean-looking books, but with the almost rotten-looking walls, I wouldn't even be surprised if undead lived in this store.

As I was looking around I heard someone calling for me.

"Hey, little boy, do you want to buy a book?", A middle-aged man said with wavering eyes.

After looking at his nervousness I was able to recall what had happened to this store. The man in front of me is William Forjar, a man that is probably drowning in debt after borrowing some money to keep this store cleaned up and running but of course, the bookstore didn't bring in any sales and the interest on his loan kept increasing.

The only reason why a year later his bookstore would be running correctly was because Ciel had paid a large amount of cash for a martial arts book that she then gifted to Arthur for his birthday.

But now that I think about it, this is a perfect place for a hideout. It has 4 floors, no one comes here and most of all it is a bookstore so if someone were to question its owner they would find out it was me, a bookworm, so I decided to buy this place from this man.

"Say, old man, would you be willing to sell this place to me?", I said with a small smile.

"Huh?, What did you say?", after hearing the question he seemed to be confused.

"You see, I have quite a liking for books so I was wondering if you would sell me this book store"

"Oh, really?", The man said with an excited voice, he was probably thinking of me as someone like a young master.

"Yes, that would be correct, you name the price and I would see if I can afford it"

"Then...", He said, probably thinking about his debt.

"Hmm?"

"10 million, yes, 10 million for the ownership of the store"

'He truly is a foolish man, isn't he', how can someone sell a 4-floor building that is located in district one, in the marketplace nonetheless, for 10 million, and that's if you don't consider the multiple books you will be getting, no wonder this guy is in debt.

"Oh, I have just enough, would you like to make a contract first?"

"Yes!, that will be perfect", He said while looking like a dog hopping around for a bone.

After writing up a contract on paper that stated that the ownership of the building and anything inside it would be transferred to Keith Devans for 10 million RP, we both signed the papers and I scanned it using a function in my watch to keep it safe on the web.

I then transferred him the money.

"Thank you very much"

"Ah there is no problem, young master Keith"

"Haha, then you should be on your way"

"Oh yes of course thank you so much for this"

Before leaving he handed me the keys, which didn't really matter as I would probably be replacing it later on with an automatic door.

After he left I decided to head to see Ray and turn in, this contract to make it official.

I arrived at the place and once again looked for Ray using my skill and was able to easily find him.

Standing next to him I said, "Nice to see you again, I hope you will be giving me my gift soon enough", and headed to the register before he could say anything just to piss him off.

But sadly I wasn't exactly tall enough to be able to poke my head through the counter so I had to be on my tiptoes just to speak with the receptionist, and I could hear, that bastard laughing at me.

"Uhm, I would like to turn in a contract regarding the ownership of the shop named, [Arkaic Bookstore]"

"May I see your identification?"

"Yes, here it is", I extended my arm as possible to allow the receptionist to look at my watch which had my ID on it"

"You could just use the hologram option if you wish to show me your ID", She said, speaking all cutesy.

But I was more focused on the fact that I had forgotten about the hologram option that comes with the watch, even when instead of using boards in school, the teachers use holograms for classes, like how was I still able to forget such futuristic technology.

And after looking around the watch I found the button and after pressing it, a blue screen appeared and I was able to show it to the receptionist.

After a few minutes of typing, she said, "It is all done, you should be able to see an app on your watch called ownership, that will list your properties"

"Thank you very much"

And after being done with everything relating to the store I decided to head back to the academy, grab a meal in the cafeteria and then go to sleep and that's exactly what I did.
