Chapter 27
“Hey!” he called, suddenly regretting he’d never learned this driver’s name. Alone in the darkness with a stranger deserting, Henri felt if he had at least the man’s name, like a spell, he could make the man return.
Henri watched the torches progress unhindered by his pleas. Henri jumped down from the cab, wrapping his furs tighter. It wasn’t nearly as breath-haltingly cold as the mountains, but the night across these lands moved thick like a broth. Even the stars were obstructed. Henri slowly walked towards the edge of the road.
“Wait! Don’t go near that!”
