It was quiet, afterward. Unbearably quiet. We sat beside each other on her bed, neither of us particularly comfortable, wearing clothes she quickly fetched from her wardrobe just in case someone popped their head in. I knew I wouldn’t be staying until morning—not when her father was home, and there was a high possibility her mother might have heard the scandalous news of my coming out. Not when Emily could come back from her own night out at any minute. Before, ours were simply harmless sleepovers between two teenage girls. It would be different now, I knew. Even if neither of us said it.
Neither of us said anything.
We sat beside each other, smelling of each other, faces still flushed pink, both of us speechless before the enormity of what we had done. We sat in silence for a long time. Perhaps the longest period of time we had ever been silent together and undistracted, both of us sitting on the bed and staring blankly ahead. Neither of us shifted.
