Bath

I left Nikolai in our room, tears staining his ravishing cheeks, his muffled beautiful sobs following me down the hall like echoes of my own fractured heart.

I wanted to comfort him, to hold his tiny body between my arms, to ease the sting of what he had just learned, but I knew I could not, be would not let me, I knew he would push me away the moment I try to get close to him.

He would never understand—how could he? In his mind, I was a monster serial killed, twisted, and controlling.

And maybe he was right.

But that did not change the fact that I did this for him, and did not change the fact that I am in love with him and would burn down the world and watch it turn into ashes if he asked me to.

I forced myself down to the kitchen, each step weighted with the hollowness of my beautiful husband's cries.
