"Moon!" Moon turned her head at her mother's voice.
"Yes, mother?" She answered, abandoning her drawing of dark figures in the rain.
"Come on! We're going to miss the train." Her mother beckoned her to hurry up.
"Coming!" She said, trotting up to her, with a bright smile on her face.
"About time," Moon's older sister, Ocean, snapped. Moon simply ignored Ocean's rudeness, though.
"Come, girls." Their mother sang, already walking down the street. Moon ran after her, almost tripping over her sister who had gotten ahead of her. Ocean just glanced behind her and flicked Moon's forehead. "Hey!" Moon complained, stomping up to their mother. Her mother was humming to herself, walking briskly. Moon began to survey her hometown. Although she had never truly lived in a kingdom, she liked to pretend to be a knight protecting the princess. But now, she had a feeling she should stay quiet. Something wasn't going well…Shrugging the foreboding feeling off, she watched her mother instead.
"Are we almost there?" Ocean groaned. Moon smiled and tapped her mother. "Mother? Ocean is asking a question."
"Hm?" Their mother said.
"Are? We? Almost? There?" Ocean asked loudly.
"We are here." Their mother responded cooly.
Jumping up and down, Moon ran into the train, choosing an empty car and plopping down in a seat. Her family followed more slowly but sat next to her. The conductor made an announcement that they were about to leave.
"Hurry up, train!" Moon demanded, hitting the seat.
"No, Moon, don't hit." Her mother scolded softly.
"Yeah, Moon," Ocean stuck her tongue out and Moon frowned. She turned to her sister and flicked her tongue- hard. Ocean looked startled and put her tongue back in her mouth, making a face at her younger sister. Moon giggled hysterically and gasped when the train shot forward. "FINALLY!" Moon yowled, throwing her arms in the air. 30 minutes passed and Moon was looking sleepy, she began to lean on their mother when she perked up suddenly.
"Moon?" Ocean asked, looking concerned at the look of horror on Moon's face. Her family could not hear it yet, but she could. She could hear the screams of terror.
"Mother!" She wailed, tapping her mother frantically.
"Moon! What has gotten into you?" Her mother scoffed, pushing Moon away lightly.
"B-but-" She was cut off by a scream louder than the other's, a scream her family most certainly heard.
"What in the great kingdoms was that?" Ocean asked, looking petrified at the car door. The lights went out and the only thing they could hear was their own raspy breaths and the wails coming from the other car's. It suddenly went extremely and terrifyingly quiet.
"M-mom?" Ocean panicked, reaching for her mother, but she grabbed Moon who screeched in fear which made Ocean yowl.
"Girls! It's okay-" Their mother reassured them but stopped as the car door opened with a creak. They all practically stopped breathing when a tall dark figure walked into the car.
No, no, no, no, no. Moon thought. They had no idea who this man was. He was Moon's age. He walked slowly and surely with a purpose. His eyes they could not see, but Moon could feel him stare at her. He stalked closer, like a wolf stalking prey. He lunged for Moon and grabbed her wrist. Time seemed to slow down as Moon fell on the floor, her mother screamed and ran to the other side of the car, while Ocean wailed and tried to grab Moon. Time went back to normal as Moon felt razor sharp knives penetrating her wrists. She screeched in pain and tried to get away, but he held on tighter, causing blood to drip down her arm.
"MOON!" Ocean cried, but she was thrown to the side as the train lurched, Moon suspected they were the only people left alive on the train.
"Let her go! PLEASE!" Ocean pleaded, crawling towards them. But he grabbed Moon's other hand and put more knives in his wrists. Moon screamed in pain, wailing for someone to help her. But her mother just stood, shocked. Not even trying to help. Pain clawed at Moon's senses, she was in too much pain to understand what happened when Ocean attacked the man, pinning him against the ground, she grabbed one of his knives and was about to kill him when he faded, leaving Ocean to stab the train floor. Moon lay panting, her wrists bleeding. Her mother was nowhere to be seen.
"Moon!" Ocean grabbed her sister as the light's turned back on with a flash. Moon just stared blankly at the floor.
"Moon! Your wrists!" Ocean screamed, grabbing her wrists. Moon stared at her blood stained hands. Her veins were slowly turning black, an infection.
"Moon, oh no! Moon!" Ocean continued to cry for her. Suddenly, Moon pushed her sister away and called, "Mother!"
Ocean looked up and tried to spot their mother, but she would not find her. They never would. She had left her children.
"She's gone," Ocean whispered, pulling Moon closer. Moon tried to pull away, calling out blindly, "Mother! Mother!"
"Moon!" Ocean slapped Moon softly, making her turn around and face her sister. Moon's face was tear-stained, while her hands were blood-stained, her veins black.
Something changed in Moon. Something she could never get rid of.
