The Magic Mercenary

After being reborn on a new planet and in a new universe, Jalim was excited. In his previous universe, he was a military officer who had to work for the government from the moment he was discovered to be an Esper until that final mission that took away his life. Now known as Nathan, he was born into a small commoner family with no expectations or responsibilities placed on him besides finding a good bride. This was not like his previous world which had technology that dwarfed the carriages and most magic items in his current world. The only things that seemed somewhat impressive, technology-wise, were their golems. He had seen various species and traveled between stars, fighting in wars that spanned entire systems or even into multiple systems. But all he was no longer interested in military life or taking on responsibilities for the sake of his family. He did know exactly what a magic knight, golem rider, or mage was but he did not really care. Because in this life, he would do what he wanted and fulfill his desires. ---------------- "The cities of gold we were promised, were not going to be there. They never were. We both know it. We may have been in denial about it but we knew. We were never meant for the military. Being Espers made us cool and kept our emotions from getting in the way of our actions but we are the types who hate having no power or freedom.  We are birds of the same feather in that regard. The military kept us in a cage. We have traveled to different stars but have never truly flown. So come with me. Let us create our own sky where we can fly as high as we wish. Let's fly towards the sun and beyond." She held out her hand. He knew what she wanted but he hesitated. Not because he was afraid of failure or denying her words. Every word she said echoed with his very soul. He hesitated because he knew that once he took her hand, he could never go back on his decision. Nathan's eyes went to Stella's face and she was smiling brightly, the biggest smile he had ever seen on her face. He was curious as to why. Then he looked down at her hand. Without even noticing it, he had already taken hold of her hand and silently agreed. He let out a self-deprecating smile at his body. He had thought that being an Esper and inside the military for 30 years,  he would have his emotions under control and would never act recklessly again but it seems that even death and enslavement could not hold down the wild spirit inside of him. He looked into Stella's silver eyes and agreed without any further hesitation. "Fine. What's the name of the group?"

Imperial Academy (1)

Nathan looked at her one more time before he took his eyes off of her.

'I would know that monster's habits anywhere. No one is able to copy her or replicate her. It seems like I need to change my choice of school.'

Nathan walked in front of the different academy leaders and looked at the cube and needle sitting on the podium. Without needing any prompting, he picked up the needle and stabbed all his fingers.

He then picked up the cube and let it pull in the ki from his core.

'This cube must be of a higher quality one that Mother gave me. I can feel it dragging the ki out of me much faster than that other one.'

Even with the faster draining speed, it still took 1 minute for the awakening cube to be filled. Most wrote off Nathan and thought he had low talent.

But the heads of the schools and other intelligent and knowledgeable people could tell that Nathan already knew how to use the cube.

This meant: he had either been paying very close attention when the others were going up and getting tested.

But this was difficult due to how small the cube is and that it would be almost impossible to see from behind.

The other option was that he had already been tested before and knew his results. This was more likely.

And if he already knew his results, he would not have come to the capital and made a fool of himself in front of such a large crowd.

Most, who knew their talent and had weaker results, would go to a smaller city to get tested to not be as embarrassed.

This led the few who noticed to conclude that Nathan must have had a large amount of talent or something special about him that made him feel confident in getting tested before them. And what showed on the screens in their hands proved it.

For a moment, there was total silence. Then all the sound came back with a single yell.

An elf who looked to be in his late 20s stood up from the Imperial Academy and pointed at Nathan.

"Join our academy and I can promise that you will pass through several of the lower noble ranks by the time you graduate."

Nathan almost denied the offer then and there. That was what he wanted the least and the main reason he was originally not even considering the Imperial Academy.

'Titles mean responsibilities. Not trying to have anything like that. Hopefully, it is not mandatory.'

Without allowing Nathan any more time to be upset about his decision to change his school, the Royal Academy and Magus Association Academy (MAA for short since that is a mouthful) both spoke up as well.

The headteacher of the Royal Academy was a male djinn in his 30s while the representative of the MAA was a female fae who looked to be no older than 20.

"Our Royal Academy may not give him a noble rank in the empire, but the connection he can build with his fellow djinn, as well as important information that even your empire does not have access to, can be gotten from us. He would be at least a count and be recommended to become an Imperial Knight captain."

said the djinn from the Royal Academy.

Not to be outdone, the MAA representative also spoke up.

"You think you hold more secrets and techniques from us. We have gathered information from all over the world with our members as well as have some of the best teachers.

Our mystic program is one of the top 3 in the entire world."

None of the other school representatives spoke up. They knew that with Nathan's talents, it was a fight between the big three and not them. It did not mean that the others would not enjoy the show though as they wanted to watch the leaders fight over him.

But to their disappointment, each of the representatives only gave a single line to try and pull Nathan in.

They each had their own prestige and would not beg for a student. Even though Nathan had the potential to be a powerful magic knight, he was no future golem knight.

Nathan took a moment before he walked over to the Imperial Academy section and to join their new students.

Both the other school representatives were upset, especially when Nathan did not even apologize to them or say any kind words.

Most would at least say something like, 'sorry but I've chosen them' or 'sorry but they have been the school my parents wanted me to join' but none had ever just ignored them.

Without knowing it, Nathan had entered into the bad books of both the representatives.

Nathan would not care even if he knew though. After he walked up to the elf, she gave him a crest/badge that would be his student ID.

He stood behind her along with the rest of the group after sneaking a peak a 'Sunia' one more time.
