Chapter 41 : Face-to-Face with a Demon

*Lynn*

‘Hello, little pet,’ his wolf voice spoke to me, and I resisted the urge to remble, my whole body becoming rigid with fear.

His red eyes looked intently at me, never leaving me even as I backed up toward the river.

‘Now, now,’ he said. ‘Don’t do that. You just got here, and we haven’t even had our fun yet.’

His mind’s voice was worse than I had imagined, a purr with a twist of venom. His words alone might have been soothing but they came with a sour aftertaste that made my stomach turn.

I stopped my backward movement when I heard the sound of growling from behind. I turned and saw another wolf blocking my way. It sat on its hind legs but still rose a good two feet above me, teeth long and sharp.

I gulped and turned back. “I’m not leaving,” I said plainly. The red-eyed wolf before me gave a toothy grin that raised the hair on the back of my neck.

‘Good. I’m glad to see you got my message. You did get it, yes? My little bird made it to you all right?’
