Chapter 34 : Order from the Alpha

The idea of me, an orphaned servant, being the head of security seemed outlandish, yet there I was, dressed in the easy-to-remove armor of a full warrior with the special emblem of the security staff. This emblem meant I was third in status, just after Dex, who was second to Calix.

The only other people who came close to me in status were Morgina and the warrior’s trainer. My new place in the pecking order seemed so far removed from where I was, it almost felt like a dream.

But Aldith was always there to remind me it was real, and she couldn’t have been more proud of me. The only thing that prevented our happiness was the absence of Clara, which put a fist-sized hole in my heart.

Though I was offered my own room, I refused as I didn’t want to leave Aldith. But Aldith convinced me to move to my new quarters as she wanted to move in with the warriors, who shared their own part of the castle.
